|
|
Hi
I am playing around with the Advanced URL rewrite. All is well, but I was wondering can I inject categories into the URLs?
eg.
Board > Catname > Forumname > topicname
Convert to...
/Catname/Forumame/topicname.html
I can't seem to work out how to do this
and also
the mod isnt adding subforums in the URL.
eg.
board > forum > subforum > topic
Convert to
/forum/subforum/topic.html
I'm sure you can do this, I just dont know how lol
Thanks |

No ideas? I thought this would be reasonably simple, and demanded |

Well the topic has already been covered many times.
So first, phpBB3 does not use real categories, categories are indeed non post-able forums.
So what you want is to inject the full virtual path eg : example.com/forum-ur/sub-forum-url/
SEO wise, it's not a great enhancement, because it will make your URL longer (a lot in advanced mode example.com/forum-ur/sub-forum-url/topic-title-txx.html, even more when phpBB is installed in a sud directory).
Then, technically, doing this would mean to add extra SQLs to be able have the link working in all cases and would make the mod more complex to install.
To conclude, it's not worth it, the SEO enhancement would be minimal if not counter productive (due to url length) and it would make the mod heavier to deal with and install, so, I'm afraid we won't implement such feature. |

Oh, that's a shame, I was hoping I would be able to do this.
My category names are single word keywords which I feel would benefit the search engine results by adding these relevant keywords, gues not
But thanks |

We are of course able to do it, being able to do something is not the same as willing to, and it does not mean it's something you should want, at least from the SEO / server resources point of view.
To me a forum is not a CSM or a knwoledgebase, and SEO mods should not cost too much resources because, even though it can be a great part of a site's success, only the content and the design matters for real users. So you what you want is to keep some resources to install cool mods your community will actually use and free time to provide with the most and better content |

I think when I started looking into SEO, I was eager to to ever topic showing high on google. But as I look around this forum and more into SEO, I have come to release this probably isn't the best option. Reviewing my forum topics also shows me that I don't even want alot of the topics showing up!
I have taken your advice and I am now finalising using the Mixed URL SEO which I feel will work best.
In terms of wanting better keywords in the URL for forums, I have simply optimized the cache forum names to include better keywords. I feel this will work efficiently without adding any extra server load.
Thanks for your advice |
