Mediapartners-Google/2.1 visit my site around 900 times a day.
However many of the threads it visits are months old / ancient. Looks pretty random actully.
Shouldn't the mxsitemap mod (which I have) help the bot to concentrate on newer more relevant threads ? |

Well, it's not a bad thing if Google is taking time to properly analyse your web-site content prior to output adds.
And mx Google sitemaps, if this the one you're talking about, can be set so it will output less topic url per forum if you like.
They are sorted by last modification date by default, so the one to never be active are always at the end of the list.
But, this is one this mod interest to allow better indexing thus more crawl and cached pages. The dig out of old threads can be interesting depending of the content quality and type.
They could end up showing up in search engine results and grab visitors
