External Sitemap?

hello,
i'm just wondering...
how can i point an external sitemap to google?

for example,
my domain is ::www.mydomain.com

and i have a sitemap here:
::www.mysitemaps.com/sitemap.xml

i understand that you have to place this
--> Sitemap: http://www.mysitemaps.com/sitemap.xml
to your robots.txt file

but what's next?

it isn't allowed in google webmaster tools to add a sitemap rather than those you place on your root folder?

The section entitled "Sitemaps & Cross Submits" on sitemaps.org explains that offsite references in robots.txt are valid, e.g., bots adhering to the proposed standard should accept it. Adding it to your robots.txt file should suffice, i.e., you are not required to submit your sitemap to each search engine.
