Google search results

I am sure many of you must have noticed that sometimes when we search in Google we get results, with links from a website in a differently formated way. Like try searching for the term "opensource" (without quotes) and you will notice the first result has many links from the same website pesented in a different style.

I am curious to understand how is this done ?

Are you talking about the extra links under the main one when the query matches the a domain name like this ?

Actually it's Google to decide to add these to web sites being considered as important enough according to their criteria.
It's hard to tell which are the exact criteria, but being big and well know seem to be important, visits as well maybe. google.com does not have these http://www.google.com/search?q=google

It could even be decided on a per case basis rather than on an automated one.

I wonder if it has to do anything with submitting seperate sitemaps for each section ?

Nope, I don't think so.

I don't think you'll ever see a forum being linked this way to each of it's Google sitemaps (one per forum with mx Google sitemaps).

It rather deals with pages being the most linked and representing a true section of an entire web site. The thing that let me think it could not be an automated process is the section choice, because not all of them are usually listed, so it look like some human choice was behind.

I will try to write to Google when I get time and ask about this. I dont know if they would answer.

Meanwhile if anyone of you can get this info from Google or anywhere else pls do share

I am pretty sure they will not answer, or at least will not say "if you do this, you'll have that".

I really think this is the kind of thing given to trusted web site on a per case basis.

Tell us what they answer though, it's interesting.
