Using gmail to backup files

Hi I heard many people using Gmail to backup files. Can someone share how can this be done without emailing the files to yourself ?

I think there is a firefox extention also available for this. How reliable is this.

I had heard about such device long ago, but though by then that this was not really something more than a geek toy. Because we don't really know if Google will allow this for ever or if the developer will maintain a compatible code, and thus cannot rely on it for our sensible data's.

So I never tested it, but here it is : the gmail drive.
