It is to avoid duplicates... Two URLs with the same content yoursite.com/phpbb/index.php yoursite.com/phpbb/ Will be both fighting for page rank when they are the same thing. and can be bad SEO wise . so it is a good thing to have index.php be redirected like that. Just like the Locking in the www URL's concept. better to have locked in www to your domain instead of having two URLs www.yoursite.com yoursite.com Google does not just visit main pages. if it enters your site, you can be assured that it is going to follow every link inside your main page. Just to make sure : did you implement some HTTP 301 redirection that allow the old VB style rewritten URL to be redirected to the new phpBB ones ? Because if not, Google must be seeing a lot of 404 right now, and that's not really a good thing.
