The PR on my site have suddenly dropped from 3 to 2, even though backlinks are increasing.
Could Google be penalising me for something?
dcz, as you know, I had trouble with dupes and 302 redirects. Could this be linked to those? |

So with only 6 DC showing a different PR, it really looks like the ending PR will be 2 this time.
But the forum only gets 5 Google backlinks so far (none without index.php) and same for the main domain. Not much. Have you submitted it to our directory ?
Did you have many backlinks on the older domain ?
So it hard to tell as the update is still going on, the forum index here just got ranked two days ago while the update on the home page occurred like a week before.
When thing are moving like this it's hard to tell where it will end.
When did the PR changed ?
Usually, we can tell it won't move again couple days after the update, as it can change more than on time during the update.
But it looks like 2 will be hard to beat this time.
And this does not necessarily mean your web site won't show up in good position in SERPs.

I don't actually understand why Google shows so few backlinks, as I know there are a lot more, including on Dmoz (Open Directory), Myspace, Flickr and Wikipedia too, as well as multiple links from other forums.
A friend does link to it from his WordPress blog which happens to be on the same server and therefore has the same IP address. Could it be that Google thinks we're a link farm and is penalising us both (his has gone down from 4 to 3 at the same time)?
What about outbound links from the forum? Could these be causing a penalty? I have been thinking of setting up "nofollow" tags, especially for people who don't give us a link back in exchange. |

There are more links out there than are showing up on the link checker, I don't know why they don't show up.
There used to be probably a hundred or so links to http://gladetalk.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=285 but I lost the PR for that once I started the mod-rewrite. |

Will I need to make fresh installations of each of these updated mods or are there simple "update" versions?

Getting back on topic, there are incoming links from dmoz, myspace, other forums, blogs etc, but at the moment none of them are showing up.
Somebody seems to have added a couple of links to a wikipedia page but I understand wikipedia has set "nofollow" on all external links, so I know those don't get counted. But where have all the others gone?
Also, is it better to have links to specific pages on the forum or all to the home page?
And do outgoing links reduce the PR or does it not make any difference? |

Both. A sitemap should provide a link to all pages, and most important pages should have extra linking within the web site.

A bit, but it depends as well on the number and types. It seems that links related to a specific content does not do much harm.
You'll find here many topics ranked with some external links, not always all related. Usually the related links are not bad.
Besides, PageRank is not all what's making a SERP, and a web site success. IMHO, even if I understand the reasons, adding no follow tags is not the nicest thing ever done by wikipedia.
Obviously, spammers are responsible for this 
In a spam free world they would not loose much getting rid of these, but it would be something to the linked web sites, and if they are linked, why not share the bot surfing a bit ?
