Since you ask, why not implementing one of our phpBB3 mod rewrites ?

I did think about it but found when php updates I was worried that phpbb SEO wouldnt update etc. No disrespect but find it safer to keep to the default urls as it saves me a job everytime phpbb3 updates.. I have used your mod urls over the past mind.
cheers

Well, we're not close to end the phpBB SEO project, believe me Wink

Talking about the updates, had you noticed that we as well provide with automatic update packages for the premod ?
It makes the SEO mod very easy to maintain Wink

So....... Should I read between the lines on this one and assume that you might be in talks with Acyd Burn?

The phpBB team would be very wise to adopt what phpbb-seo has done into the phpBB default code base. Idea

Well, I don't think they will do such thing any time soon, and I have to admit that it's not necessarily something we should want the phpBB Group to do.

I'm not saying that SEO and url rewriting are useless, but the main principle so far followed by the phpBB group was to release a universal script, and they did very well so far, phpBB3 is by far the the forum that is following the highest coding standards and that is the most universal.

This is an important principle, that should not IMHO be changed, and that would be broken if they'd decide to implement url rewriting, since url rewriting will not be available on all servers.

Then, generally speaking, SEO is where things should become the most particular, there is no universal SEO strategy, and not all forums do need it, so this in itself does not fit well in the universality principle, since SEO is going in the opposite direction.

I recently posted in a thread about this on phpBB.com : http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=1134585

Worth reading if you like to understand the several views involved on this matter better.

Good points and I have to say I agree after thinking on it longer. In the longer term, my expectation would be that the phpBB team will continue to develop the software so that a 3rd party rewrite would not be needed. Additionally, as Search Engines continue to develop, my expectation is that they will allow the Author to focus on CONTENT and UI rather than SEO.

Well, there will always be things to avoid and other to implement in order to be decently indexed and ranked.

But they will more and more depend on the specific type of site concerned IMO.
