Yes, but it's, possible that some AllowOverride is still required to allow the Options +FollowSymlinks set in the .htaccess to be effective, since you're using aliases for phpBB.
I once tested aliased phpBB with mod_rewrite, and did this.
Was with Debian sarge and apache2. |

| Ok users complaining, I backed out the mod now have just cyber alien installed. Can you tell by looking at my site if the cyber alien mod I installed is working properly? Before I re apply the the mixed mod rewrite again? |

Yes, the cyber aliens guest sessions mod is working as expected, I don't see any SIds in links on the first page load.
About URL rewriting, you can still work on the .htaccess and VHOST before you add the php code changes, it won't rewrite the urls, but you'll still be able to test rewritten links such as -http://www.simplefit.org/phpbb/nutrition-f2.html
Once it will work, you can install the mod.
Maybe setting up a regular phpBB install (not aliased) is an easier solution. I'm sure that it can work with aliases, but it may require some set up in the VHOST to allow the .htaccess to fully work.
You could as well try to implement the rewriterules directly in the vhost.
