Following on from a previous thread I am wondering if it is a good idea to have the index of my forum refresh itself?
I'm not sure exactly how often it refreshes, but I think it is about every two minutes. I installed this mod as I can do work on my computer and I know instantly when I get a PM because I get a pop up when the forum refreshes.
Is it a bad thing to have the index page refresh itself or can it be a bad thing?
Thanks in advance

My forum is not that big and only has about 1400 members, there is normally no more than 100 people in the forum at any one time and the site is on a dedicated server-
This is the spec-
AMD Athlon 64 3,000+
1,024 MB DDR RAM
2x80 GB hard drive (RAID1)
100 MBit data transfer speed as standard. For 100 simultaneous full website views of a typical 100 kByte website it will take 1 second, on a normal 10mbit connection it will take 10 seconds.
I'm no expert, but I think that this should be able to cope with the demand. The forum has not crashed once since moving to the dedicated server. |

Should be ok as far as server load. But, still, if for example you're displaying adds on the page being refreshed like this, could, with time, be treated as cheating, depending on the adds program.
I know many website do use meta refresh, every 30 sec, and do not seem in trouble even with AdSense, but still. Especially if you let the forum index open all day long.
You should in this case, and if you're displaying adds, prevent them to be displayed for your account ID or IP. It's useless to display them for you, and beside, dangerous as you could click by mistake or just display to many time the same page at the same rate.
Without adds, it's only a server load possible issue, if it is not, then it's ok.
The RSS feature of GYM sitemaps could be as handy to follow the forum's activity.

Thanks for that, I currently have adsense in the overall header and I believe this can be against Googles TOS and so I am going to remove it from there asap.
I'm off to remove the code right now
Thanks

I don't have adsense in the overall header , it is in the viewforum_body, but I'll remove it from there to avoid any possible complications in the future. I would hate to get in trouble with Google
edit: it was in the index_body.tpl |
