Subforums

I have just noticed that this site has subforums

I did not realise this was possible with phpbb, is there a special mod for doing this?

yes
there is two good mod for adding subforum feature to phpbb

the first one:
Categories Hierarchy

installing this mod is very hard. some of mods need some tweaking to work with this mod. with this mod you can have unlimited depth of subforum

the second one:
simple subforum (recommended)

installing this mod is much easier than category hierarchy mod. with this mod you can have subforum with one level depth.

This mod has now been installed and it seems to work well

I am going to test it out later in one of the public forums.

Before I make the subforums I would like to know if moving topics into the sub forums can cause any problems with indexed posts being lost etc.?

Nope, it will not change the topic url to be moved in sub forums, just like if you'd moved them into another regular forum.
