|

I have a problem with a trouble maker on my forum, he is continually upsetting the forum and yet I cannot ban his IP address as he is on AOL and there are more than 50 members on my site with the same IP address, which are similar to 195.93.21.1
He keeps using different e-mail addresses to open new peofiles and cause trouble!
Is there anything I can do to prevent him from posting?
Thanks in advance

I have had this very same issue over the last year and a half. He has registered over 75 usernames in that time period and will not go away.
One thing that I did was created some code to prevent new registrations from certain IP addresses. Existing aol members are not affected by this but anyone trying to register will have to contact the board admin to get registered.
There must be a trend that people who use AOL are idiots on the internet.
"sorry to those of you that use aol" |

Well, you could just complain to the concerned administration, because, in some way, this is hassling.
You could collect as much data as possible (ip and mail used) and then, write a spam report to AOL, who in the end can easily find out who is the dumb guy causing trouble and warn him, or even disconnect him in case he's really abusing.
Have you tried to warn him about the fact that he is far from being anonymous connecting from an AOL ip (as with any personal web provider), and that some laws could be used to have him stop ?
In France, there are some laws against hassling that in the end could apply to such cases. No one is supposed to go to far in hassling, and it seems that's applying to this guy's case. 75 account created is hassling to me.

It seems stupid that AOL give most of their users the same IP address, this makes no sense at all
The guy that I am having trouble with has only opened 2 accounts so far, which is nowhere near the 75 that noworyz has had, that must be a real pain in the butt
I'll start to make a log and contact AOL if it continues.
Thanks for the replies |

Send an e-mail to the other 50+ members with the same IP and explain that you may have to ban them if AOL will not act to stop the abuser. In other words, make it AOL's problem. Ask the innocent AOL members to send a "love note" to AOL support on your behalf. Losing customers' monthly checks motivates ISPs like nothing else. |

That is a good idea
I am really mad at ISP's as many of them think they are gods. AOL and a few others treat e-mails from my site as spam and when new members try to join they often do not because they never get their regiatration e-mail. This should be illegal and ISP's should be sued over this as I am sure it is damaging many businesses
I am all in favour of stopping spam, but genuine websites are being effected here as well, it's really annoying |

I've been meaning to look into this, there must be something phpBB is setting in the outgoing e-mail header that AOL et al are flagging as spam. Every few weeks I check for inactive accounts and send a "do you need help activating your account?" e-mail. Verizon blocks activations too. What a pain... |

| Why not remove the phpbbheader from admin mails and create a more personalized message. also there are tools on the internet that show you what the spam blockers check for and how to avoid them. a simple ! or ? in a title causes some major spam blockers to block. One of the tools i use searches the link backs of competitor's sites and scans page for contact forms then pulls contact information form contact forms. Then afterwards iit scans the email that you have typed and tells you which spam blockers will block it and why. It is an interesting program. learned allot about valid emails being blocked as spam. |
