phpBB.com just announced when and how phpBB2 will stop being maintained and supported :

| NeoThermic wrote: | Hello,
Today we are announcing our retirement plans for phpBB 2.0.x. This is advanced notification so that everyone can stay informed.
Commencing Wednesday 1st October 2008, phpBB 2.0.x download links will be removed from the download page at phpBB.com. Anyone wishing to obtain phpBB 2.0.x can continue to obtain the 2.0.x package at sourceforge.net.
Commencing Thursday 1st January 2009, phpBB 2.0.x will be formally retired, and support will no longer be actively provided for 2.0.x. Converting from 2.0.x to 3.0.x will continue to be supported.
Security patches, if required, will be provided until Sunday 1st February 2009.
The reason for the early retirement is the PHP Groups decision to retire PHP 4. phpBB 2.0 mainly runs on the PHP 4 codebase and it would be unwise to require people to have an unsupported version of PHP installed in order to use phpBB.
Teams will announce how they will handle the retirement in the coming days. |
This give us good hint on when to schedule the upgrade to phpBB3

For a while there I thought phpbb2 was going to be supported by phpbb.com much, much longer. but this is good news too - Helps phpbb3 become the main focus much more now with developers and what not.
I was hoping to move to phpbb3 by that time too. |

| Indeed, I got the impression it would be years before phpBB V2 was declared officially dead. Oh well, now that I've migrated, I agree it was worth it. For me, there isn't "killer" functionality in V3, but the difference in performance is HUGE. My site went from pretty good to mediocre response time to blazing fast overnight. The majority of that benefit is probably attributable to the switch to CSS / prosilver, though the extensive caching also brought down SQL traffic. I've put off server upgrades thoughts for at least six months. |

Well, this forced upgrade represents a major problem for me. I run a heavily modified board with a custom theme. I don't even remember all mods that I have installed.
I will try to stay away of phpbb30 until the last days of 2008 |

Yeah, some mods that I use are already part of the phpbb3 now. But dozens more aren't. One that isn't, and does not exist for phpbb3 is the downloads mod |

I will upgrade to phpbb3, I'll set a phpbb3 private board and mod it (slowly ) and when Im done I'll delete the current phpbb2 board and make the v3 public.
i just need to ask something, is the url seo scheme in phpbb3 equal to the phpbb2 url scheme? btw I'm using advanced mod_rewrite. |

Assuming you don't use the virtual folder options, yes, they're the same. Well, there is a minor change in the anchors, but that's phpBB's decision (they added "p" in front of post anchors, e.g., example.com/phpBB/blah-blah-blah-t1234.html#p10234). |

So I have to install at the same time, advanced mod_rewrite and the zero duplicate? This question is just for reference since I'll install every single seo mod you guys have eheh
And what is that "virtual folder" you talk about, this? www.site.com/forum/viewtopic.php"
I have my forum on the root directory |

I think I will be sticking to phpbb2
I know some forums that are still on very early versions on phpbb2 and have never done a single update.
Moving to phpbb3 would be a major hassle for me. |
