I think I perfectly understand the principle, the thing is yes you do output the same content within the posts, but if you use a different template for bots only, you're technically cloaking bots (that's what xs.cfg is doing), as the two pages do have a different html source.

I'm pretty sure cookies are being used used, but this is another matter.
I had the same discussion concerning the bots mod (here and here), as well able to output an optimized template for bots, and ended up thinking exactly the same.
I know some will claim nothing ever happened to them using the feature, but none of their website where massively visited. To me, blacklisting is mostly due to competitors reporting to SEs, and this is a lot more likely to occur on website having success, which is our goal isn't it ?
It's just the kind of risk I would not take, and I am pretty sure that the this is not the most important and efficient optimization one could do in the end, content, mod rewrite and sitemaps are far more important to build up good SERPs.
I do not tell you this without having deeply though about it, the only way to use a lo fi template without cloaking is to use it for all guests, which is more or less the same as running an optimized template, as you probably do not want real users to think the lo-fi template is how your website really looks like.
A nice way to deal with a lo-fi template could as well be JS, you could add all the styling using JS, so that at least most users would see how nice your layout is designed 
And bots would not be cloaked

I don't want to be polemic, but english is not my mother tongue, so I can seem to a little bit acid...
1. The cookie is used only for Real-Life user, i think you've understand it from the sources.
2. I wouldn't consider it cloaking. The content hasn't changed, the site is merely stripped down to the bare essentials.
3. Take a look at
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Aforum.cellularmagazine.it&btnG=Search I don't think that google think that they're cloaking....
4. BTW you're right about the rest: content, mod rewrite and sitemaps are far more important to build up good SERPs.

Don't worry, I do not fear discussion, and that how we all go forward in understanding.
The thing is, technically it's cloaking, you cannot say both the lo-fi version and the regular one won't have differences in source code, and that the Google cache won't be different from the page real (but not logged in) users will see when following the link in SERPs.

Progress has been slow on this.
I must knuckle down to this again as with the basic template, load speeds are practically non-existant which from an SEO, bandwidth and indeed visitor experience is great. |
