phpbb mod rewritePosted: Wed Dec 20, 2006 7:34 pm    Post subject: Re: phpbb mod rewrite

And welcome Very Happy

Well, the phpBB SEO mod rewrite are of three kinds, each one doing different URL transformation.

The simple one will output :
    Topic : topicxx.html and topicxx-yy.html for pagination
    Forum : forumxx.html and forumxx-yy.html for pagination
    Categories : catxx.html
    Posts : postxx.html
    Members : memberxx.html

no title injection.

The mixed one will do as the simple one but will inject forum and category titles in their URLs :
    Forum : forum-title-vfxx.html and forum-title-vfxx-yy.html for pagination
    Categories : cat-title-vcxx.html

The advanced one will additionally inject topic titles in their URLs :
    Forum : topic-title-vtxx.html and topic-title-vtxx-yy.html for pagination

As you can see, we decided to always keep the numerical IDs at the end of the urls, and this for two reasons. First, it more natural, if we read from left to right it's easier to read IMHO, and second, the same for bots, they "read" from left to right, so it could be a bit better to keep the best keywords the closer to the left side of URLs.

Then, talking about your two example, you'd need I think, to keep at least a separator for the numerical ID.

It's better to filter cases, as your rewriterules would have greater chances to get tricked by URLs with numbers near where an ID is waited for.

I kept the "-vt", "-vf" etc separators to stay compatible with the good old webmedic mod rewrite, but the next release will shorten these, as the zero dupe will be soon here to allow such changes in our URLs.
