yes it works but there is little problem
this trick will change all link to plain text and finding links between text is hard. there is a mod here here
with the move that i mentioned above, you can show your links in bold face and they are not clickable. but if you want to keep your link active you can add nofollow tag to external link by installing deter comment spam mod

Is that for links that a user posts in a thread?

I just apply the nofollow attribute to everything.
