phpBB Search Engine Optimization FeedbackPosted: Fri Jun 23, 2006 5:21 pm    Post subject: phpBB Search Engine Optimization Feedback

Feedback on phpBB Search Engine Optimization

Hello everybody Very Happy

So I though it could be a good thing to track our results a bit.

The idea, for those willing to know the before / after changes obtained with the phpBB SEO methods for phpBB, would be to post here how many pages of your forum where indexed before and after you did anything we proposed here and to do as well for your domain's Google PageRank.

The before should be posted before you do anything, the after at least a month after you implemented your tweak selection to start seeing the results in indexing, and at least after one Google Dance to start viewing the effects on PageRank.
It is OK though if the first report is based on reminds, if your site has already been re-indexed with the changes you implemented when you find out about this thread. Just mention it in the Additional Comments.

As well, it could be a good thing to report the predicted Google PageRank in the reports, just to measure how precise is the tool.

So I propose this template for reports :

For the First report :

Quote:
Report for Forum Name

Date : mm/dd/yy
Forum URL : http://www.example.com

Indexing :
Absolute number of pages : How many pages in your forum, even approximated

Google PageRank
  • Google PageRank : The Google Page Rank
  • Predicted Google PageRank : The predicted Google Page Rank

Search Engine Optimizations :
mod Rewrite : Yes/No (Which one if applicable)
  • mx Google Sitemaps : Yes/No
  • mx Sitemaps : Yes/No
  • Others : Yes/No.
    Which ones if applicable.

Additional comments
    Additional comments, if any.

And for the following ones, when you start to see results or notice a change, just post a new report (do not edit your first one, it's a proof Wink ) using this template :

Quote:
Before / After Report for Forum Name

Date : mm/dd/yy
Forum URL : http://www.example.com

Previous Report(s) :
Link(s) to previous report(s) (date)

Indexing :
Absolute number of pages : How many pages in your forum, even approximated

Google PageRank
  • Google PageRank : The Google Page Rank
    Was :
mm/dd/yy : The Previous Google Page Rank

  • Predicted Google PageRank : The predicted Google Page Rank
    Was :
mm/dd/yy : The Previous predicted Google Page Rank

  • PageRank Transmission :
Some comments about how PageRank was transmitted among the forum

Search Engine Optimizations :
mod Rewrite : Yes/No (Which one if applicable)
  • mx Google Sitemaps : Yes/No
  • mx Sitemaps : Yes/No
  • Others : Yes/No.
    Which ones if applicable.

Additional comments
    Additional comments, if any.

You can just quote the following post to get the template's source and edit it to fill it faster Wink
You'll just have to change www.example.com with your board's URL (including path when applicable, e.g. www.example.com/forum/ )

Once done, preview your message and follow links to find out how many pages are indexed and such in every Search engine listed here, so you can add those in the report.
And then don't forget to check your domain's current and predicted Google PageRank. You should check for at least your main domain (www.example.com without the eventual path) and can use our Google PageRank Checker.
Please use our Google PageRank Prediction tool just to make sure we benchmark the same one Wink If you find different prediction, you can use the Additional comments part to elaborate further if you wish.

Then, please use the proposed URLs to list your pages in search engines, so that we all use the same and allow precise comparison.
As well, using the same template will make it easier for us all.

Note :
Please only use this thread to post and comment reports, if you want to go further in presenting your site or in elaborating on your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) results, please post in the relevant forum that is :

As well, please wait at least a month in between two reports.

Thanks for participating Wink

phpBB Search Engine Optimization FeedbackPosted: Fri Jun 23, 2006 10:41 pm    Post subject: phpBB SEO report

So here I go with this board Wink

Quote:
Report for phpBB SEO Boards

Date : 06/26/06
Forum URL : http://boards.phpbb-seo.com/

Indexing :
Absolute number of pages : +- 300 (rough estim 91 topics, 605 posts)

Google PageRank
  • Google PageRank : 0
  • Predicted Google PageRank : 3

Search Engine Optimizations :
  • mod Rewrite : Yes (Custom)
  • mx Google Sitemaps : Not Yet Wink
  • mx Sitemaps : Not Yet Wink
  • Others : Yes.
    phpBB SEO Dynamic Meta Tags
Many other we will soon talk about Wink

Additional comments

This site was first opened (publicly accessible) on the 29th of April 2006.
As you can see, results are really different for search engines.
MSN Search is really quick in indexing new web sites, and you can see it went faster than my debug process here, and many pages went indexed before I uploaded the robots.txt file and debugged all the web site's links.

That's why quite some useless un-cached links are showing up right now, but no big deal, it will be fixed, and those aren't search-able anyway so ...

And with the french one :

Quote:
Report for phpBB SEO Forums

Date : 06/26/06
Forum URL : http://forums.phpbb-seo.com/

Indexing :
Absolute number of pages : +- 300 (rough estim 103 topics, 910 posts)

Google PageRank
  • Google PageRank : 0
  • Predicted Google PageRank : 3

Search Engine Optimizations :
  • mod Rewrite : Yes (Custom)
  • mx Google Sitemaps : Not Yet Wink
  • mx Sitemaps : Not Yet Wink
  • Others : Yes.
    phpBB SEO Dynamic Meta Tags
Many other we will soon talk about Wink

Additional comments

This site was first opened (publicly accessible) on the 29th of April 2006.
As you can see again, results are really different for search engines.
MSN Search is behaving strangely with phpBB, because in this example, it's even not working with this one from where I stand : http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=forums+phpbb
So it's phpbb + forums to be problematic, crazy.

See, reports tells us a lot Wink

To see all listed URLs in MSN : http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=site:phpbb-seo.com 882 pages for all of www.phpBB-SEO.com much better Wink

phpBB Search Engine Optimization FeedbackPosted: Tue Jul 11, 2006 10:13 pm    Post subject: Re: phpBB Search Engine Optimization Feedback

Search Engine Optimizing this site will be a great enhancement, since almost all pages went spidered with SIDs which makes it impossible for PageRank transmission, as there is now way bot will find the same URLs than the spidered one on the site.
Then, you must have noticed, almost all your URLs fells into the omited Google results, and that many posts links went spidered so that most of the spidered URLs must be duplicates.
This, we will fix it Very Happy

Then, Categories Hierarchy in only supported by the simple mod rewrite, this may be an occasion to try dev at least a mixed one since the simple one is stable Wink

Mx Google sitemaps Is already ready for CH Wink

phpBB Search Engine Optimization FeedbackPosted: Mon Aug 07, 2006 5:38 pm    Post subject: Re: phpBB Search Engine Optimization Feedback

From those results, we can see yahoo and altavista have spidered a lot of pages with SIDs.

Something I forgot to tell you about your robots.txt, add this
Code:

Disallow: /phpBB2/forum-

as they are not used anymore (able2know standard).

Then, I think Google listing is going to increase a lot.

For msn, we again see their strange filtering policy being still applied. Here a thread about this.

I edited your post a bot to add the correct yahoo link and to tell you installed mx Google sitemaps and the phpBB SEO advanced mod rewrite Wink

Ok I added that entry to robots.txt.

For the report I did not specify any mod rewrite or mx google sitemaps because I thought this was the "before" part-

  • How do I find the total number of pages?
  • I have had the forum for 3 years & I think that due to this fact alone and that it's also a very active forum, this helps us considerably to be found in the SEs.
  • I love this stuff and I am extremely tempted to see how far I could take my forum and PHPBB SEO. But equally, I am very aware of undoing all the hard work that's already there.
  • Don't be fooled, I am NO expert
  • I hope you enjoyed the stats & effort put into bbcode

Laughing a lot Wink and you won't regret it, as on day, you'll be able to enjoy and measure your SEO efforts.

For the total amount of pages, it's possible to make a rough esteem this way :

You take the total number of topics (topics) (in acp), the total number of post (posts) and the number of post per pages (ppages) topic per page (tppages) and the number of forums.

A rough esteem could be :

esteem = post/ppages + forums/tppages

But since this does not take into account the fact that content can be hide to public eyes or deleted, only a full manual crawl could be really precise I guess.

acapellas4u wrote:

Actually, time is a major parameter nowadays, quite logical too, search engines tend to dislike to work for nothing, so they like to see pages staying online for a long time and for sure take this into consideration while rating pages.

The fact that it's an active forum help out a lot too, because search engines as well love to see new content when they visit a page.

You are very right though to be willing to first not jeopardise what you already have. With 3900 pages already spidered you don't want to change anything. Here come the zero dupe program I plan to release soon. I'll PM you about it.

And don't worry though, the phpBB SEO mod rewrite are very unlikely to cause any more trouble than to let some link un rewritten at first if they are outputted by mods (but of course we provide solutions for those cases, with our add ons).
The only "sensible" part here is setting up correctly the path (meaning no path in your case as phpBB is installed in the root) in the .htaccess, not that it is hard, I mean, putting the correct folder name is not hard at all, but it can make all your link go 404 until you put the correct one.

For the phpBB modules such as mx sitemaps or mx Google sitemaps, no worry at all to expect, they just do not change a single line in the phpBB script nor in it's db tables, so you should not even be able to fool phpBB code with a wrong copy / paste Wink

phpBB Search Engine Optimization FeedbackPosted: Mon Sep 04, 2006 9:34 am    Post subject: Re: phpBB Search Engine Optimization Feedback

Jeez it's so good to see the UTF-8 mod rewrite to be working so well Very Happy

Besides, I don't know if it's because of what looks like the beginning of a Google Dance or what, as there are a lot of moves in Google listing since last week, but you do have 2 030 listed pages in Google and I can go up to 746, all cached no dupes Very Happy

So it is very good actually.
Unfortunately it seems that MSN did either not follow or did not find at first your robots.txt as it started caching profiles and post a bit, even though things are in the right direction (forum and topic are as well cached).

For the PageRank it is a bit strange, how old is the domain ?

You seem to miss backlinks a bit, Zero for Google, 14 for msn and 63 for yahoo, it's not much, but you should end up PageRanked next Google dance.

yes you are right but i used the secound result
i think the first result (i mean 2030 page) is not accurate
we don't have 2030 page indexed in google
the second resoult is accurate

http://www.google.com/search?q=site:forum.irani.ch&hl=en&hs=c1m&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&start=740&sa=N&filter=0

the result in first page will change every 6 hours and has lot of swing
