Well, concerning the code, it depends, but chances are great that you'll need to perform some HTTP 301 redirecting.
So first, I strongly encourage you to set up a test server to do the job offline and make sure everything will be set proper when going online.
Not that this is something hard to do, especially if you already installed few mods, but when HTTP 301 redirection and mod rewrite are involved, we need to make as few mistake as possible.
So first, you need to get rid of all codechanges from the other mod, the difficulty depends on how it is implemented, but basically, you just need to follow the install and perform the change to go back to the original code.
Then, install our mod, you can even install our SEO premod, following these advises since you'd do it on an existing board, and once everything is working, install / activate the zero duplicate mod (included in the premod).
All you'll need to do to all proper redirecting of the old urls, no matter the url rewriting mod you'll be using from us, will be to keep the old rewriterules up and running at the end of your new .htaccess. The zero dupe will then be able to perform the required redirecting.
Test the urls and the redirects, and once everything is working nicely, upload your code online. You'll just need to run the mod rewrite installer, make sure your forum url are set up properly, and eventually adapt the .htaccess to the eventually different phpBB path online. Everything should then work as expected, but you may want to first make sure you properly set up the .htaccess, it's pretty easy to do, you just need to upload it first, the old mod rewrite should still work since it contains the old rewriterules as well, if it's the case, then everything is ok, if not, it should not be more than some path to adapt in the .htaccess, just make sure you use the same path in both the old and new rewriterules.
