Old phpbb2 mod-rewrite URLs not workingPosted: Fri Jul 27, 2007 4:00 am    Post subject: Old phpbb2 mod-rewrite URLs not working

dcz, please help!

As you know, I successfully had my phpbb2 forum indexed using advanced mod rewrite and zero dupe. I ended up with thousands of pages indexed on Google, thanks to your excellent work. Cool

I have now converted my board from phpbb2 to phpbb3 RC3 and have installed the latest mod-rewrite and zero dupe.

But I have tried clicking on some of the URLs indexed in Google and I just get 404 errors. This is no use to me as it means I am losing traffic from backlinks (of which I have been getting quite a lot recently) and from search engine results.

What can I do to resolve this? If need be, could I simply revert to the standard phpbb3 URLs and use mod-rewrite to convert the old friendly uRLs to standard ones?

I have now reverted to my phpbb2 board until I can find a way of resolving these issues. Sad

Maybe it is a bit early to migrate.

Anyway, if you want to go for the advanced phpBB3 one with virtual folder injection :

Please note that all type of upgrade from phpBB2 to phpBB3 will change all your topic url, no matter if you use or not mod rewrite, so upgrading is in all case something to prepare well.

This means you only need to keep the old phpBB2 topic and forum rewriterules up and running at the bottom of your phpBB3's .htaccess to let the zero duplicate do its job. Nothing more.

Thanks, dcz. Smile

I could really use some of the new features right now, especially some of the improved moderation facilities, plus I've been hyping up the virtues of phpbb3 to the users for quite some time...

I would prefer not to have the virtual folder injection at all, it makes the URL way too long for my liking. I would much prefer an option to keep the URLs in the format of the phpbb2 advanced mod rewrite (especially since we have a number of newbies who tend to post in the wrong subforum, so topics often get moved).

I don't really understand why this can't be done, as I understand that the "f=xx" part of the URL is optional, i.e. if you enter a phpbb3 URL as www.myexample.com/viewtopic.php?t=1999, it will still return a page.

Sorry if I'm being a bit slow here (Wink) but does this mean that I should put the old phpbb2 rules in addition to the new phpbb3 rules in the .htaccess or instead of the new ones? (I'm still a bit of a noob when it comes to mod-rewrite)

The upcoming RC3 version will allow to select to use or not the virtual folders.

The rewriterules will mostly be the same, please wait a bit and you'll have a solution.

OK, dcz, I have installed the RC3 version and zero dupe, with virtual forum injection switched off, and it's all working very well. Smile

The only remaining problem is that my old URLs (i.e. all the thousands of URLs currently on Google and all my backlinks) end in vt.html - but the new ones end in t.html

Any attempt to access a vt.html URL on the new board results in a 404 error.

So what is the rule I need to add to the .htaccess to convert vt.html URLs to t.html ones? I presume it's something very simple?

Thanks. Smile

Edit: ah, never mind, I think I've worked it out now. Cool

Did you edit the phpbb_seo_class.php file ?

It's pretty simple to either keep the old -vt's or to redirect them all to the new -t's.
