Show latest post url problemPosted: Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:46 am    Post subject: Show latest post url problem

I have successfully install mod Rewrite phpBB3. It is working properly, but i have one problem
At home page "View the latest post" small image url is not working propery.

When i click on that "View the latest post" image then it give me that url
"/post864.html"

When i click on "important moderators needed" topic then it give me that url
"/important-moderators-needed-t15.html"

Same page but different urls.

How can i convert "/post864.html" to SEo friendly url "/important-moderators-needed-t15.html"

Show latest post url problemPosted: Wed Jun 18, 2008 12:30 pm    Post subject: Re: Show latest post url problem

That's normal. Look in the Admin Control Panel under PHPBB SEO > phpBB SEO class settings > Zero Duplicate. If enabled, the post redirections choices control how postXX.html are displayed. Whether you want to keep postXX.html or use the qualified URL is up to you. One small drawback of mapping postXX.html is the qualified URLs change if you split the topic. That is, postXX.html is permanent; important-moderators-needed-t15.html#p864 isn't permanent (i.e., it could be split into a new topic and the same post could be more-moderators-needed-t20.html#p864).

Quote:
Keeping the postxx.html URLs is harmless SEO wise as long as you keep the disallow on post urls in your robots.txt.
Redirecting them all will most likely produce the most redirections among all.
If you redirect postxx.html in all cases, this as well mean that a message that would be posted in a thread and then moved in another one will see it's url changing, which thanks to the zero duplicate mod is of no harm SEO wise, but the previous link to the post won't link to it anymore in such case.

Show latest post url problemPosted: Wed Jun 18, 2008 12:36 pm    Post subject: Re: Show latest post url problem

You may want to install the no duplicate mod then Wink

The mod rewrite base does not rewrite post urls as topic urls and does not do it with title injection by default for several reasons.

First, post urls are in the end the only url that will be always valid to reach a message as long as it's not deleted, whatever you do like merging thread moving messages and etc ...

So keeping them keeps this property which can be useful to some. Of course, we deal with duplicate in several ways. First, the suggested robots.txt makes sure that post urls won't be indexed, so it's pretty much harmless to let user use them.
Then, the zero duplicate mod can redirect them (if post redirections are at least set to 'guest'), and this can be performed for guest (thus bots) only or for all users.

And in then end, for those would would still like to got one step further, the no duplicate just translate post urls to the corresponding url. The link can fail to lead to the exact post if the message was moved or if pagination parameters changed, but these cases are not so frequent, so it's not really problematic in most cases.
The last concern is that the no duplicate will need an extra SQL join while building the forum indexes, to get topic titles, since it adds a proper INDEX on the topic table, it's pretty fast, but still, it can be problematic for big boards with limited resources.

So that's why it comes separately and can be deactivated in ACP once installed, even though again, it should not be a problem in most cases.

Our demo server is using it : http://phpbb3.phpbb-seo.net/ and it's included in our SEO premod Wink
