Did I mess up.Posted: Tue Jul 11, 2006 9:20 pm    Post subject: Did I mess up.

A few weeks ago (before I stumbled upon this site) I installed the able2know seo url rewrite rules in .htaccess, but I neglected to do anything about my google sitemap at the time. I think this may have caused me a problem, since the urls in the sitemap xml were still showing as vewtopic.php etc.. Within days of doing this the google site command showed all of these php urls had gone supplemental, but the new static urls were never indexed. I've removed the able2know mod since and installed the mixed mod rewrite (thanks for providing this) as well as the mx Google sitemap module and I'm now waiting patiently for the new urls to be indexed.

My question is, would the careless approach I took with the initial installation of the able2know mod have set me back any. Is there anything you can recommend to hasten the removal of the supplemental php urls and get them replaced with the new static urls? or am I doomed to supplemental hell Sad

Well, kind of, but nothing that can't be fixed Very Happy

First make sure you uploaded the correct robots.txt, excluding in your case all phpBB vanilla URLs as suggested in the mod rewrite release thread (the one you are using Wink ), eventually the able2know ones as they may have been spidered as well.

Then, DO NOT use the complete removal of your site Google Tool !

Just go there : http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/topic.py?topic=8459#exclude_pages

Login to your Google account and use the (sorry, but with my IP Google does not allow me to see the page in English Wink ) "something like automated link removal tool", based on you robots.txt.

Basically, You just have to Disallow all unwanted URLs in your robots.txt and submit it to this Google tool.

Google will then take away all of the Disallowed URL at once and other search engines will do the same when they will find your robots.txt file, it's just not automated to be all done at once, but they'll disappear quite fast from cache and completely with time from every search engine (the decent ones) to have spidered them.
