My site has just crashed again and has been offline for over three hours. I have called support 4 times and they are still trying to fix it!
My site is regularly crashing now despite being on it's own dedicated server. I think it is time to move to a new faster server with a different hosting provider.
I have many of the seo mods installed from this site and wondered if any of them would be effected by moving them to a new server?
My other website was recently moved and there seemed to be a problem with apache, htaccess and mod rewrite- which needed fixing.
As the seo mods from here are extremely complicated, especially GYM sitemaps will it complicate things when I move servers?
Thanks in advance

Moving server will not require any changes in your set up as long as you keep the same domain name and paths.
Of course, it's better if you first validate this before you actually switch, because as you said, you could need, under rare occurrences though, to change the .htaccess a bit (only slashes in reg ex).
SO the only thing to make sure of, is that rewriterules are well formatted for the new server set up before you switch.
Since you're looking for a new server, you may want to use one with a properly geolocated ip (eg in the country where most of your users are coming from). |

Thanks seo.
I am thinking of using one of these plans- http://www.infrenion.com/dedicated_uk_hosting.html
They use UK datacentres and I have my .org domain hosted with them. They offer a free migration service, which is good because I am useless at moving databases etc.
I know that when my .org site was moved by them the htaccess file required changing as frontpage extensions had been installed on the new server and this messed things up.
Thanks

You can just switch, but I would want to confirm the cause. A dedicated server should be able to handle hundreds of concurrent phpBB users without problem. |

I'm currently with 1and1 and finding out anything at all is impossible
Yesterday I had to phone them 5 times and it took them over 5 hours to get my site back online |

I'm not sure it's much different with other providers.
I just looked and there's 251 concurrent users, but that's over the last hour. You should reduce the session time to no more than 30 minutes if you're having performance issues (that will prune the sessions table sooner). On my site, I changed the "Log me on automatically each visit" checkbox default to checked; that will avoid the need for returning users to login in, which is one of the reasons board owners typically extend the session time (and to give the appearance of a busier board).
BTW, does your Google Analytics data suggest there's an unreasonable load? |
