Cached subforum urls or not?Posted: Tue Jun 03, 2008 5:53 pm    Post subject: Cached subforum urls or not?

september 2007 i have transformed my forum from phpbb2 to phpbb3. Then i went to the url structure: forumname-f4/topic-t1078.html. Since then i have been verry active in linkbuilding, but especialy linkbuilding to the diffirent subforums, in order to get proper sitelinks.

I think i have hundreds of links to the different subforums with the -f4 not cashed forum urls.

I really would like to use the cashed urls because they are more bautifull, but i think this would be bad for my ranking. What do you think?

Cached subforum urls or not?Posted: Wed Jun 04, 2008 8:38 am    Post subject: Re: Cached subforum urls or not?

The Zero duplicate will handle the redirecting of forum url with IDs to forum URLs without IDs without any problem, as repeated many time in the install and the acp, the only "issue" with forum id removing and redirection would be when you'd change a forum url without id to another one, in such case, the old url would be a 404.

So, if you carefully choose your forum url once and for all before you get rid of Ids, everything will be fine, old urls will be properly redirected. Google et all will acknowledge it pretty fast, but you'll have to wait until the next Google Dance to see PageRank on the redirected urls. Serps and indexing should not change during the process though.

For your internal linking, it's no big deal since the link will be redirected, but still, you should update them to match the final url, it's not something you really need to do at once, you can imagine to update them even at a low rate in case you have many. It's just something that should be done IMO.
