| My site contains an article that has lots of backlinks and is well indexed. I've added content over the years to it and now it's getting a bit lengthy. Will repaginating it for better readability risk losing the good pagerank it now enjoys? |

Oh then go for it right now, you'll end up with more pages and the keyword density of each page should increase if you take this occasion to re organize a bit your content.
Each pages of each article should for example repeat the main article title, but, have another one, like a sub title, with more focused considerations.
The first page should be a good introduction to all the other, because it will be the one to keep the older page's PageRank, and will thus be the best candidate to work on a t first. The page where you should mention all what's said in the following pages, and use all the important related keywords.
The nice thing is this first page can go up in SERPs just because you made it lighter, better organised with keywords with more weight.
All page should be linked to all the other pages of the article they are related to. And better if each one is interesting by itself, a user finding page's three of a structured article should be able to read this third pages and be happy with it IMHO.

Thanks, I hoped you would say that. In essence, "what makes readers happy makes search engines happy."

Good point. Occasionally I look at page turn statistics to "tune" an article for readability and concluded that lengths over 1000 words risk getting skipped over by impatient web readers. Somewhere in the 500-700 word range appears to be the sweet spot. I've noted that the first and last pages tend to get more reads than the middle, I assume influenced by those who read and leave + those who skip to the end right away.
On a related note, analyzing navigation paths helps your readers and SEO. I found, for example, that the majority of links past the second half of the home page are rarely used. So I moved up the home page's "recent posts" to the top left of the page and tweaked some of the navigation links. There's still work to be done, but a couple visitors commented shortly thereafter how well organized and easily navigable the site was. Navigation path analysis is a "wisdom of crowds" way of assessing your site's friendliness, i.e., if you see a group of links are rarely used, there's a reason... |

| As a follow-up, I can confirm that the repagination of a large well-ranked article improved its overall ranking for keywords within the article. It's also better organized, proving the adage, "what's good for readers is good for search engines." |
