Hi there --
I was just wondering what the very basics of optimizing a PHPBB board would be? By that I mean what you could do at the very start, without installing any MODs, etc...
Thanks very much,

The very basic are quite simple, we want well organized and good content. We want each page to have a unique title and url and we want baclinks from related websites.
Talking about phpBB (2 & 3), it's clear that you'll need some mods to get good results.
With phpBB2, the first step to allow minimal indexing was to get rid of SIDs, with phpBB3, SIDs are dealt with directly, but, URLs have become more complex and URL rewriting even more useful than before.
You'd really obtain better results with one of our phpBB mod rewrite, this is for sure |

| Thanks for your reply, dcz -- my forum has a PR of 5 right now...if you're saying that your phpBB mod rewrite could help boost it by one or two spots, I'll definitely look into it... |

Help is for sure, but one or two more on the PageRank scale is not predictible.
What will happen, beside the new bot friendly urls will be duplicate reduction. Our mods will destroy all the phpBB duplicate and this will help out for better SERPs, but the effect for PageRank won't necessarily be seen directly, since by the meantime you'll drop many pages (the duplicate). On the long run, it is for sure a good thing : http://www.phpbb-seo.com/boards/phpbb3-zero-duplicate/discussions-vt2454.html#16404

In the spirit of balance... I agree duplicates are not a good thing, either resource or search engine wise, but to play the "Devil's Advocate", I'm not aware of hard evidence proving that the elimination of duplicate pages changes your site's page rank.

You're right for PageRank, but I'm not this sure when it comes to SERPs. Problem is duplicate reduction can decrease significantly the amount of page indexed, and the total amount of indexed pages being as well an important parameter for SE to evaluate a web site impact.
What is for sure is duplicate pages will tend to exclude each other from SERPs, so reducing them should help each individual page to rank better in serps, but, at the same time, if the total amount of pages decreases, it can lower the overall web site "weight" a bit, since the web site could then look smaller.
My opinion about this is that running a duplicate free web site is better for SERPs on the long run, and that duplicate reduction will not get things worst, in some case, it's possible that a huge decrease in the amount of indexed pages will compensate the benefit of duplicate reduction, at first, but, I don't think it can go further, and then, it's a good thing on the long run. |
Now the real question is, what is your phpBB version. If you are still running phpBB2, you may want to take the conversion occasion to switch to our mod, it would make it a lot easier and will lower the amount of required redirection, since you would not have to convert after having redirected all the phpBB2 urls. |
