Converting old forum from different domain - I'm stumped!Posted: Tue Jan 01, 2008 11:31 am    Post subject: Converting old forum from different domain - I'm stumped!

Hi.

I've just this minute created a brand new subdomain phpbb3.acapellas4u.co.uk so I can start testing your wonderful premodded phpBBSEO package - I'm going for the Simple ReWrite option at this stage.

My old forum is /home/websites/www.acapellas4u.co.uk/public_html/ and the new location is /home/websites/phpbb3.acapellas4u.co.uk/public_html/

What do I enter within the 'Board path' field? I have tried and tried but as yet, am unable to start the conversion process.

I would just like to point out that there are no issues with incorrect settings for the forum's db I wish to convert.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated & HNY.

If it does not work with the full path (/home/websites/www.acapellas4u.co.uk/public_html/) or the relative path (/../../../www.acapellas4u.co.uk/public_html/), you can still first install phpbb3 in a sub dir of your main domain, convert from there and then move it to the sub domain's dir.

You'd just have to update the config (domain and script path) and clear cache to move it.

Thanks SeO - so that's the exact syntax for the relative path - I couldn't remember for the life of me I really couldn't.

Whilst I was waiting around for posts I took the liberty to simply install in a sub folder /phpBBSEO/ within /home/websites/www.acapellas4u.co.uk/public_html/ - I've also managed to convert my old forum over which took a while, mainly due to 5gb of file attachments accumulated overtime and now I've just upgraded phpBBSEO to Rel. 3.0.0.

For some reason unknown to me the homepage is completely blank and i haven't yet seen a forum homepage. At present I'm only able to login directly to the /adm/ and that's it but if I wait for the redirect I see a blank page again, so I have to be quick to actually enter the ACP.

Right now, I'm currently creating the Search indexes but I'm still anticipating the issue to be there once it's done.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

Is the install/ dir still online ?

And make sure the config is correct for where phpBB is installed (domain (should be "www.acapellas4u.co.uk"), script path (should be "/phpBBSEO").

Ultimately, try clearing the phpBB's cache.

  1. install dir has been renamed
  2. phpBB config within ACP checked and path and domain are both correct
  3. How do I clear phpBB's cache?

Thanks for the swift reply SeO

In the general category of the acp, in the main body, or you can just delete all the files within the cache/ dir except the .htaccess and index.htm.

Try to activate debug, replacing :
Code:
// @define('DEBUG', true);
// @define('DEBUG_EXTRA', true);

with :
Code:
@define('DEBUG', true);
@define('DEBUG_EXTRA', true);

in config.php, it may output an error message you could paste here.

Nice Tip, edited config.php as above but no Debug information shown and still no homepage.

Double-checked the new config.php was written aswell.

Regards.

Converting old forum from different domain - I'm stumped!Posted: Tue Jan 01, 2008 5:19 pm    Post subject: Re: Converting old forum from different domain - I'm stumped!

Laughing got it.

Delete the index.htm or index.html file that must be in your phpBBSEO/ dir.

That's the file we are viewing. The forum works well : -http://www.acapellas4u.co.uk/phpBBSEO/viewforum.php?f=22

But you still need to set up the .htaccess. The zero duplicate should be activated after the rewritten links works : -http://www.acapellas4u.co.uk/phpBBSEO/h-o-u-s-e.html

You can generate an .htaccess meant to be uploaded in the phpBBSEO/ dir, so that you can test everything without touching the other one at the root level.
To do so, first hit "more option" in the .htaccess generator, and then, choose "alternate location" Wink

Wohoo! Nice one SeO - always something relatively simple isn't it.

I've just taken a look at one of the forums and it half redirects me to the current forum with a msg The forum you selected does not exist.

I tried this one but please feel free to try any.

I'd prefer to get an answer to that point first before moving onto the Zero Dupes and .htaccess points you raised if it's all the same to you SeO.

Cheers Smile

it's the .htaccess is seems.

You need to generate and install one with your last mod rewrite settings. The option I talked about could help.

Our last Mod Rewrite settings as in from the existing forum? If so the details from that are below:

Code:
DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm portal.php index.php
php_value max_execution_time 6200
php_value upload_max_filesize 10M
php_value memory_limit 50M
php_value post_max_size 10M
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

php_value upload_progress_tracking.file 1

Is that what you wanted to see?

One thing I have noticed if it's of any relevance is that phpBBSEO is set for Mixed mode rewrite - the existing forum was only ever set to Simple Rewrite.

As tempting as it is to just fiddle with some settings within ACP I am resisting as I'd like to fully understand what's going on here really.
