Hi there guys.
PHPBB on GODADDY !!!
If you plan to install phpbb on godaddy and you're are pretty new to DB and the whole stuff just consider the following suggestions if you don't want to pass 2 or 3 days asking why it does not work:
1. Chose a Linux hosting plan. Windows based hosting plans has no .htaccess support (.htaccess is the file you put in the root of your web site to define the URL rewrite rules, mod_rewrite is the main feature of the phpbb SEO without it there is no reason to install)
ONLY LINUX HOSTING PLANS ARE OK, DO NOT CHOOSE A WINDOWS ONE!
2. .htaccess on linux has a cache that refresh every hour at the beginning of the hour. Once the .htaccess is refreshed and your .htacces is seen, the the forum will begin to work. So take it easy!
INSTALL PROCESS IS SMOOTH BUT YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE .HTACCESS TO BE SEEN BY THE SERVER SYSTEM AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY HOUR!
I hope this will help in preserving your health and preventing your nerves to short cut |

Looks like you speak from experience
Would be nice if they gave you an interface to refresh the .htaccess file more often. |

Hi,
I also recommend the Apache web server for hosting phpbb boards but it is not really true that Microsoft's Internet Information Server cannot rewrite URLs.
You simply need an additional module called ISAPI_Rewrite (which is not free in its full version ).

That completely depends upon your hoster. My .htaccess files work immediately after uploading them.

Actually......
As of IIS 7, IIS has rewrite features.
Take a look -

It's about time. |

That's interesting - thanks for letting us know!
In my opinion it's silly to take a commercial web server software when everything you want to do with it is based on free software like PHP and MySQL.
When you are an ASP.NET developer, your number one choice will be IIS, regardless of trials to make ASP.NET available on Linux servers (like the Mono project does).

My site is hosted on GoDaddy and changes to the .htaccess are immediately recognized. That said, I do vaguely recall support documented that the .htaccess won't be recognized immediately the very first time it is uploaded. Once it's on your server, subsequent updates are recognized without delay. |

It's all about options. And in some cases (students for instance) .net and windows is free.
Personally, I use LAMP for almost all my projects however, I do find situations where a Windows/PHP hybrid is what I need and use.
For some, it LAMP vs. .NET is a religious discussion. For me, they are all just tools to help you get things built. |

Very true
Reminds me of some endless discussion about XSI vs 3dsmax kind of. What matters are the images build, not the tools used IMHO.
But to continue with the religious comparison, only one of the two is a paid one, so this would mean that linux is a religion and windows a sect
