SEO is about helping search engines discover your superior content. I would not recommend dedicating more than 10% of your efforts to SEO activities. Rule #1 of any successful website: Content is King. |

A site must have core content (articles, knowledge databases, downloads, etc.) that initially draws visitors. The forums, which are the focus of this site, come into play for discussion among long-time members or queries from new members. How a website owner and forum discussion facilitator (*) encourages thoughtful discussion is something I've been meaning to document.
To put it a different way, a perfectly SEO friendly site filled with chatty BS in the forums will not attract the attention of search engines. Good content in the form of articles, downloads, or forum discussion must be "visit worthy" to get backlinks from blog writers, other sites' forum participants, social bookmarkers, etc. With those backlinks come higher SERP rankings. IMO, seeking backlinks purely for the purpose of "boosting" rankings is wasted effort. You're better off investing your efforts in building a site worth visiting than trying to erect signposts throughout the Internet pointing to an instantly forgettable destination. Besides, index scrapers have already perfected that angle.
(*) I avoid "moderator", which is frequently synonymous with "rule enforcer". Here I refer to someone who forms / leads discussions. |

Exactly.
These 10% spent on backlinks are though important. The backlink quest should not be the one you spend time the most on, but, you should work on having new backlinks on a regular basis, not necessarily a lot every week, but regularly.
Just like content, you want new content to be added on a regular basis rather than all the sudden 20 articles and then nothing for two month.
