| I'm going to go ahead and do the advanced mod-rewrite. Wouldn't it be a good thing to go ahead and edit the files to include zero dupe? |

They are intentionally not combined:
| Quote: | | As HTTP 301 are to be used with caution, the downloads are only available for registered users. This mods makes HTTP redirecting very easy and you should not change all your URLs every other day. Do not hesitate to ask for support when first installing. |
Redirecting URLs en masse for an established board should be done with caution. A careless mistake could jeopardize your site's ranking; subsequently it's a separate members-only download.
The benefit of the zero dupe mod is limited for new boards because they don't have thousands of duplicate URLs in search engine indices to correct. That is, the rewriting mods already avoid creating duplicate URLs of the same content that is intrinsic to the base phpBB code (viewtopic.php?p= and variants of the viewtopic.php?t= URLs with pagination). The zero dupe for a new board would only help changes in URLs due to title changes / moves by redirecting search engines to their "new" URL.
By the way, I asked the same question a few weeks back - why not combine them? In retrospect, I agree that adding the extra step is prudent because it forces the modder to think about the ramifications, and encourages modders to ask questions before applying it. |

| Ok...My board has been up for 3 months and has about 800 pages indexed by google, and our PR is a lowly 2. Let me ask you this, would it be wise to install the 0 dupe? Or just install advanced mod re-write and leave 0 dupe out and let google phase out the old url's on its own. This is all new to me so If I'm confused just bare with me...I catch on fast. |

I think it's worth installing the zero dupe for a new board to allow for retitling without creating duplicate URLs; for an existing board, I think it's mandatory. Google will never remove the "old" viewtopic.php URLs because they're still valid, even after installing the advanced rewrite. In a nutshell, the zero duplicate checks if the incoming URL matches the remapped URL; if it doesn't, it returns a redirect. The search engine happily updates its index to the new location. No dupes, more efficient spidering, what's not to like?
Applying these mods are no more difficult than any other mod. The only difference is you need to confirm that the redirects work correctly:
http://web-sniffer.net/
This site will display the return header, e.g., "HTTP Status Code: HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" for your old URL with a link to the new URL. Make sense now? |
