I actually consider a root-install, but couldn't find a lot of info about how the virtual folder trick can then help to categorize URLs and content and inject additionally chosen keywords into the URL.

In regular mode, a topic url will look like example.com/topic-title-txx.html, if you activate the virtual folder trick, you'll have example.com/forum-title-fyy/topic-title-txx.html and even example.com/the-keywords-you-want/topic-title-txx.html if you additionally activate the forum id removing option.

So it helps to categorize content because you could have two topic using pretty much the same keywords in url posted in two different forums, like it could be the case for a phpBB support forum, supporting phpBB2 and phpBB3 in separate forums.
Following the example, phpbb3/asking-for-support-txx.html has much more meaning than just asking-for-support-txx.html.
