I decided to move my newest site from a 1and1 server to a server with a new web host.

The domain name is registered with Lycos and I have about 20 domain names registered with them.

Normally when I make a site or move a site I log into my Lycos control panel and click on DNS setting and then change them, it normally has-

Enter first server:
Enter IP address

Enter second server:
Enter IP address:


Usually I just go in here and put in the setails that my new web host has given me and I am away.

But this time I have a problem

My site is now offline and has been since last night.

I have tried to change the dns settings in the Lycos control panel, but it comes up with an error and it asks me to contact support. I called them today and the lady that I spoke to says that the setting will not work, because the ip addresses are too close together. I then contacted the people who have migrated the server and they have said that the ip addresses are correct and that I need to "register your private nameservers with the ips that we have given you "


The dns settings that my new hosts have given me are-

NS1.ultimatehandyman.org - 78.129.159.174
NS2.ultimatehandyman.org - 78.129.159.178


But I cannot change these in the Lycos control panel as they say that the ip addresses are too near to each other!

Who should I be chasing over this, Lycos or my new web hosts?

I really don't know what to do next and it really is most annoying

Sorry for the delay. I guess you solved it now or ?

DNS update can take up to 48 hours, it's usually faster but since many cache level are involved. It could for example have been update before you can actually see it because your ISP DNS has the old location in it's cache for 24 hours, things like that.

This is though a really odd concept. It's not the registrar business to worry about the DNS setup as long as it works, If the ip you used are the one provided by your host, they should not bother ...

This is still not resolved and I am far from happy about this!

It seems to be Lycos that is the problem!

I logged into my Lycos account last week and changed the dns settings and IP addresses for the new server and there was no problem. I then contacted 1and1 and told them to release the domain from their server (which they did). I went back to Lycos to double check the settings for the new server and they had changed back to the settings for the 1and1 server

So I tried to change the settings again and it came up with error2 contact support. I telephoned Lycos support on their 0870 number and the woman told me that the IP addresses for the new server were incorrect. I then wrongly blamed my new server hosts for this and I also gave them my username and password to log into my Lycos account. They logged in and could not change the settings either and so tried pointing my domain name to one of their shared servers that has a few hundred sites on and that would not work either. They suggested that I move the domain name to somewhere that gives full control of the dns settings.

I applied to move the domain name on Sunday and then telephoned them on Monday and the guy at the other end of the phone was far from helpful and said that I have to fill in an online contact form (these take 72 hours to be answered) I explained to the guy that my site had been offline for three days and that I wished to transfer the domain name and he said that I had to fill in an online ticket he then also said that domain names hosted with Lycos do not work for dedicated servers, although my domain name had been pointing to a 1and1 dedicated server for two months

The domain name authorisation code was asked for on Sunday and then followed up by a telephone call on Monday and also a ticket was filled in online on Monday. It is now 20:00 on Wednesday and I have heard nothing at all from them and my site is obviously still off line.

Jeez.

This is making good registrars even more precious !

What kind of business do they think they are doing, I mean, you could be big enough to sue them for the money loss online.

I was lucky enough not to experience such problems so far with dns, but already had few head hakes with some registrars. Since then, I found a honest and efficient one, and stayed with it for all my domains.

I have plenty of Money to sue them, but I do not need the hassle. If I do not hear something by Friday I will call my solicitor and get him to sort it out.

I have about 25 domain names with Lycos. As soon as this one is transferred I am moving all of them to my account with totalregistrations and I will then close my Lycos accounts.

Getting this new site back online is very important as I have a guy that is waiting to add 200 instructional videos to the site. If he goes to one of my competitiors I will not be happy

I now have the authorisation code from Lycos, but it could still be 5 days before it is fully transferred.

Yes thanks, it is all sorted now.

But the site was offline for about 7-10 days, which is very annoying! Especially when you are trying to get mods installed etc.

I have a DNS issue with my wifi I keep getting a DNS server error and when that happens cannot log onto internet I am using Dial up at moment does the DNS server address get given automaticly or do I need to find it myself????

This really depends on your wifi settings and to the access point you're using. Though, usually, I would expect wifi access points to run a DHCP server and thus provide with DNS settings (as well as ip) automatically.

Make sure that you set up your computer to find ip and DNS automatically.

some times I also have the same problem
