www in google sitemap

Postby ultimatehandyman » Wed Sep 24, 2008 8:57 pm

I have just noticed that my directory, which is on a subdomain-
directory.ultimatehandyman

has the www before it in the webmasters google page

and so it shows as www.directory.ultimatehandyman.co.uk

instead of directory.ultimatehandyman

There does not seem to be an option to edit it, should I delete it and resubmit it, or is there a better way?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about sub domains, but for domains you have an option to set your proffered domain url in your google webmaster account, where you can tell it to use or not the www prefix.

Anyway, it's not very important, since this only makes sense for google, the best is to implement the www prefix redirection (method n°2) to make sure you fix the issue for all users, including bots.

So far, the www prefixe is used in your signature link for the directory, and both cases are working, so you need to make a choice and to only allow it to be used.

Thanks dcz,

This had not been implemented on any of my sites before as I do not like messing with the .htaccess

I have now implemented what you suggest on both my .co.uk and .org sites, but I am struggling with the code for the subdomain :?

For the .co.uk and .org sites I chose the option that you suggested and now if you type in the site name it is directed to the www version, which seems to work a treat on both sites

On the directory subdomain though I would like to loose the www and just have directory.ultimatehandyman etc. I have tried a couple of different ways, but can't get it to work and so I am using the old .htaccess for now.

If you could please give me some pointers with the correct code I would appreciate it?

Thanks for your help so far it is much appreciated

I forgot to mention that I added this code to the .htaccess file for the directory as I think it is seperate from my main site.

I can only access the directory through WHM, and I have to access the main site through the control panel.

Thanks chez

Try something like :
Code: Select all
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^directory\.ultimatehandyman\.co\.uk [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://directory.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/$1 [QSA,L,R=301]

should do it ;)
