Backlinks Gone wild

Does anyone have an explanation for this.

My backlinks in google went from 5 one dayto 28 the next back to 5 for about 2 weeks, then back to 28 again for about 3 days, and finally its back home to 5 again. I haven't really made any changes. Maybe it has to do with the sites that link to me?

Yahoo always shows a stable 40 or so.

Any ideas?

When did you observed this ?

Because it looks like when an update is on its way. During the last Google dance, backlinks started moving a month before PageRank, and played yoyo like this.
