Can Google Index Internal Search Strings?

Postby Nitra » Mon Dec 18, 2006 3:08 am

Sometimes I use search strings as links to my products.
For example: -http://website.com/searchproducts.asp?sear...rt_on=&sort_by=

This is the link that's generated when someone searches for clocks on my site. Since the results are good, I'll use that as a link on the front page to my clocks listings.

Any chance of seeing that URL showing up in Google, or any search engine?

Thanks...

Well, the problem is always the same, the more vars in URL, the less bot friendly.

Google made good progress in spidering complex URLs, but they are still, and will for long, be less interesting than mod rewritten URLs that would get rid of most vars.

Often, an URL like :

Code: Select all
script.php?var1=ID&sort=default&order=default&days=default&page=xx

Can be shorten to something like :

Code: Select all
title-ID-XX.html

Because the default sorting options can here be stripped off as the script will always use the default values by default :D

You can even specify some vars in the rewriterules so that you can lower their number.

And there is absolutely no doubt
title-ID-XX.html is better than script.php?var1=ID&sort=default&order=default&days=default&page=xx for an URL ;)
