Google Bot sees 301 redirect

Postby AndyHaigh » Fri Mar 19, 2010 7:53 pm

I have a phpBB3 forum installed on http://www.cosmeticcompare.com/forums.

In my google webmaster account, there is an option to "fetch a url as googlebot". When I do this for -http://www.cosmeticcompare.com/forums, I get the following output: shown below. Can anyone help me please and explain why it is showing the 301 redirect? Obviously I don't want this as I want googlebot to index the content on the page.

This is how Googlebot fetched the page.

URL: -http://www.cosmeticcompare.com/forums

Date: Tue Mar 09 07:07:20 PST 2010

Googlebot Type: Web

HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
Date: Tue, 09 Mar 2010 15:07:16 GMT
Server: Apache
Location: -http://www.cosmeticcompare.com/forums/
Content-Length: 246
Keep-Alive: timeout=5, max=100
Connection: Keep-Alive
Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1
X-Pad: avoid browser bug

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<html><head>
<title>301 Moved Permanently</title>
</head><body>
<h1>Moved Permanently</h1>
<p>The document has moved <a href="http://www.cosmeticcompare.com/forums/">here</a>.</p>
</body></html>

This is rather normal, if it would not be the case it would be a problem.

As you can see : http://www.cosmeticcompare.com/forums/
is not redirected, so your server is just adding the ending slash with a 301, otherwise, example.com/forums and example.com/forums/ would be duplicates.

Ah, nice one thanks. Never underestimate the power of a 'slash' !!!!

Google perfectly knows how to handle 301, if you have trouble it must be something else (including 301 loops).

http://www.google.fr/search?q=site:www. ... om/forums/
159 indexed page for 74 topics is not exactly not being indexed to me, actually it looks more like the opposite.

Dcz, you confused me with the other user. My website is www.jocurisupertari.ro/forum/ and not cosmetics etc... The only pages indexed are the ones with phpbb tagging which are made using a mod. The actual content of my forum is not indexed at all and i am currently trying to understand why. I mean, not even one page ?

I browsed your site using Google translate and http://seo-browser.com/ -- if there is index-worthy content, I could not find it. I found many categories and empty threads, which Googlebot is smart enough to ignore. Would you post a few URLs that you would expect to be indexed? Does Google Webmaster Tools report that your site is being crawled?

Keep in mind that Google does not blindly index everything. If it finds little content/keywords, the page will be ignored. The Webmaster Tools will tell you how many pages are ignored (though not which ones).
