Duplicate sitemaps

Postby ultimatehandyman » Sun Jan 11, 2009 7:54 pm

I have just noticed that when I log into my Google webmaster tools that I have a duplicate sitemap.

I'm not sure if this is a problem or not or if I should delete one of them?

From the dashboard I have my main site

www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk and then it says 2 sitemaps

Then underneath it says

www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/forum1 with 1 sitemap

The second sitemap that is listed with the main site is the /forum1 sitemap and so it has exactly the same pages indexed as the forum sitemap.

Should I delete one of these or does it not matter?

If I have to delete one, does it matter which one I delete?

Thanks in advance

I cannot find any sitemap.php file at the root level, have you submitted other form this level ?

If not, it most likely means that google is only showing you the total amount of submitted sitemaps for the whole site in the root level part. Not the same as if there actually was a sitemaps submitted at this level.

Does it show you sitemaps url at the root level ?

Thanks for the reply dcz.

I have a sitemap for the static pages in the site here-

http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/sitemap.xml

But I restrict it so that it does not spider the forum as I have the GYM sitemap installed for the forum.

But when I log into my google webmaster tools it shows a main sitemap for the site, which is the .xml one from above and then the sitemap for the forum.

Here are the screenshots-

This is the dashboard, notice how it says that there are 2 sitemaps for www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk

Then when you click on the number 2 and click on sitemaps it comes up with-

So I have the forum sitemap added twice.

I don't know if this will cause any problems or not, or if I should delete one of them :?

Thanks

Well I tried deleting the /forum1 sitemap from my account to see if it would make a difference.

It did make a difference as it also deleted the sitemap from the site account and so the sitemap dissappeared completely

I have now resubmitted the sitemap, but there seems to be a few thousand urls missing

There is no relation with removing and putting back sitemaps in your google account and the url actually displayed in your sitemaps.
