Pages being removed from Googles index

Postby ultimatehandyman » Wed Apr 15, 2009 6:23 pm

A few weeks back my site had 24,000 indexed pages in Google, it has had over 20,000 pages indexed for many months.

This dropped to 19,000 and has now dropped to 15,000

My site depends on Google search and so if the pages are not indexed, then people searching my site will not find the pages, as well as people searching Google!

Should I be worried about this and has anything similar happened to anyone else?

Was there a corresponding drop in Google's incoming traffic?

Our users have posted a total of 166618 articles

If one assumes ~10 posts per page, 16K in Google's index would be quite good.

Thanks for the reply.

There does not seem to be a drop in traffic at all, infact on some days the site gets 50,000 page views per day.

I did notice that the page rank of my home page and forum index have both increased recently.

Perhaps it is nothing to worry about.

The important matter is if you experienced any drop in visitor, since if not, the removed page just did not where read (like a topic in page 121 of a forum).

Then, it looks like you should increase the limit a bit in the GYM sitemap module, since the Electric Forum UK has 1996 topics, but the sitemap (http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/forum ... uk-gf3.xml) is only listing 1666 urls (meaning than you most likely miss more due to pagination). Increasing the pagination limits as well could help you but there is not much we can do about topic page 123 out of 238, same for forum. These have just a bit less interest for real for search engines, and again they are not necessarily draining traffic either.

Listing all (or at least more of) your topic could help to be a bit better indexed.

Thanks dcz,

I'm not sure about traffic as it is a bank holiday weekend here and so the site normally gets a lot less hits.

currently I have the pagination lower limit set to 7 and the pagination upper limit set to 5.

Can you recommend what to change these to please?

Thanks

Chez.

First set up the limit in the sitemap limit, where you can limit the absolute amount of url displayed. For pagination, you can increase to pretty much what you want, but the most important is to first output all topic and then, more topic pages.

My indexed pages in Google were showing 9000 at one point, but I checked yesterday and they have gone back up to 71,000

I have no idea why this happened, but my site has just been moved to a new server, so perhaps that has something to do with it :?:

Moving to a new server should not change much if done properly, unless its ip was blacklisted or geolocalized far from the target. But I doubt that you could be in such case, because if so, a lot less urls should have been kept.

So I think that it's just about the time googe took to re crawl and cache 60 000 pages ;)

Thanks for the replies, but I'm still not convinced that Google is indexing my site fully :?

If I use Google.co.uk I get 71,800 pages

If I use Google.com I get 8,450 pages.

Perhaps this is why I saw a huge difference in indexed pages because I use a couple of computers to check, one uses google.co.uk and the other uses google.com!

Needless to say I prefer the .co.uk results

The move could be related to the google caffeine implementation actually going on : http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot. ... ation.html
