Warnings : Google Sitemaps

Postby darjana » Mon Dec 08, 2008 7:05 am

Greetings,

Google sitemaps shows warnings;

All the URLs in your Sitemap have the same priority.
All the URLs in your Sitemap are set to the same priority (not the default priority). Priority indicates the importance of a particular URL relative to other URLs on your site, and doesn't impact your site's performance in search results. If all URLs have the same priority, Google can't tell which are more important. Help Help

Yes, that warning is new, thanks to Google's renewed interest in the priority parameter. GYM handles it in most cases by varying the priority based on the date of the last post, but the list of forums currently has the same priority, provoking this (benign) warning.

I suppose GYM could twiddle the priorities simply to avoid offending the Google sitemap police. :roll: Alternatively, the ACP could allow you to specify them manually, though I hesitate to add more admin options since there's already a ton of them.

FWIW, I've been ignoring these warnings, much like I am forced to ignore the 1000s of warnings from compilers of perfectly legitimate code. To my knowledge, no harm has befallen my site's traffic from Google as a consequence.

Omg, there's no reason to change priorities to forum-sitemap.xml . That's only sitemap for forum overview. Google is being stupid.

It's hard to tell without the "guilty" url, most likely, you're just seeing google yelling about sitemaps with few urls (could be just one) which obviously cannot have this much disparity in priorities.

All sitemaps are valid, but if google tries a sitemaps which has not enough items, it will see a 404 thus, not a valid sitemap, but everything can be normal in such cases.
