Some Questions About Settings and Need Help

Postby ardamania » Fri Mar 06, 2009 10:45 pm

Hello Everyone,

I just installed the GYM Sitemap module to my phpbb forum.
I have some questions:

1. Is the "URL Rewriting" Settings related to the phpBB SEO Url Rewritng module or is it its own URL settings.
So if I have installed the advance phpBB SEO Url Rewritng module, do I need to set it to activated and select Advance ?
If it is not, What does it do exactly ?

2. My sitemap index link at the end of the forum which is generated by GYM mode, goes to sitemap.php.
I know that xml sitemaps are better for google sitemap. So how can I do that ?
I have tried to URL rewriting for it, the link went to sitemapindex.xml but There weren't any sitemapindex.xml generated.
So, I could not understand the URL rewriting settings.

3. I wondered that why Google Ping settings are set to No by default.
Isn't it a goog thing and shouldn't it Yes by default?
I thought that If I were a good thing, I would not No by default.
So, can someone inform me about that ?

4. What is the functionality of caches of Mod?

5. Does the system generate sitemap automatically? Or should I refresh something like cache ?

I know that questions will take time, but If someone help me I will be so grateful.

1) this is correct, it only concern the GYM modules links with our SEO url mods. The mod rewrite type is just overridden by the phpBB SEO URL one when there is one.

2) No physical xml files are generated (well, cached ones are but no public one), the rewritten urls are simulating xml files, but you need to update your .htaccess to get the required rewriterules that will allow the GYM rewritten url to work.

3) Pinging google is pretty much useless IMHO since google will regularly crawl your sitemaps and find out every new public topic and forum url by its own pretty fast. We've mostly added the option to save time explaining this simple fact : Pinging google for sitemaps update will have very little impact since google is already crawling them regularly (actually, since we provide with expire headers, google will crawl them pretty much every time the cache will be refreshed).
And, not all host will allow remote access to ping domains. But, you can play with the option ;)

4) Caching for sitmepas and feeds is composed of the full xml code to send to the client. It's very fast and designed to display huge sitemaps in a very short time. Look at the option, you can set the refresh time for each type. The cache is auto refreshed by default.

5) Same as above : The cache is auto refreshed by default, when not using cache, sitemap are dynamically generated, so they are always up to date.

;)

Thank you for your clear answers.

But I have a question:
What is the advantages of URL Rewriting? Why should I do that?

It is activated in my settings and I use Webmaster tool of Google.
I get 10 Unreachable URLs, but they are reachable, or I can reach...
And I get 1 Errors for URLs in Sitemaps,
It says "Network unreachable" in details of all 11 errors.
But, I think it is not the case, because I work on my site at the same time google bot come to my website.
Can it be caused because of URL rewriting?

And an interesting thing is I don't have any link such as "http://www.rapidsepeti.com/post42.html", but there is a error appears in the error list of WBT from this link.
In details, I have this link on my site but I dont have this link in my sitemapIndex,
I have another link "http://www.rapidsepeti.com/divx-f436/kurtlar-vadisi-pusu-tum-bolumler-dvdrip-yuksek-kalite-t42.html" which is goes to same place with post42, and this link is in my sitemapindex.

Is it normal to see a link differently in the Google Webmaster Tool?
Or can this be caused because of URL rewritng too?

Can you suggest some settings or some way to do?
Before I installed the GYM Mod on my phpbb, I get one indexed page.
After installation, Google sees the links in my sitemapIndex but cant index them... and I don't know what to do :(

Advantages are many and of different kind.
The very first one is to use a well structured url standard with a lot less duplicate (duplicate is rather a virtual matter with the zero duplicate). This makes it a lot easier for bots to crawl the site.
Then, when there are keywords in urls, it will help out for SERPs since keywords in url have a good weight compared to the same keywords in the page (comparable to keywords in page title).
And last, but not least, you'll have more user friendly urls, simple example, imagine a user posting a link in a post :
Code: Select all
example.com/viewtopic.php?f=xx&t=yy
example.com/litterature/oncle-tom-tyy.html

Which one do you think will be more comprehensible both for humans and bots ?

It really depends on the type of errors you get, unreachable could only have been very temporary, depending on the network and your server status.
But that's where we get to duplicates, the only duplicate still displayed on page with url rewriting are post urls. But, there is a very easy way to deal with these as well as with any other kind of possible duplicate (including topic title editions and natural urls) : the zero duplicate.
That's the mod to install / activate now, to properly HTTP 301 redirect all duplicates. Just make sure you set the post redirection option to at least "guests" in acp once installed.

And don't worry, even now, google will index your forum, just make sure that the bot groups has read and view privileges on all public forums.
