More Sitemap Q's?

Postby Brett » Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:44 pm

Yup me again with another "I'm a bit confused question"

Question 1: If I go to my sitemap page http://forums.herphut.org/sitemapindex.xml.gz I see various sitemaps for forums as expected. In piticular if I drill down to terrariums one of the titles is "stuck" with "topic7.html" and I can't figure out why.

Question 2: To regenerate sitemaps do I simply clear the cache in Maintenance ? Doing this does not resolve Q #1 FWIW.

Question 3: It seems google is only indexing one of my URLS. http://forums.herphut.org/topic10.html that is how google is seeing my urls, this is from the 12th of this month so it may have not caught up with my changes not sure but none the less I am getting redirect errors. Just wondering what others think.

Question 4: I am using No duplicate and zero duplicate mods also and they are both on, is this the prefered method? I am a bit unsure what these are actually doing behind the scenes.

Question 5: This is far less important but I would like to remove all the "Bookmark This" links except for the add-this button. Is this an option somewhere I am looking past or do I need to do this in css / code ?

Thanks, I am having a blast with this mod so far :) Sorry for all the questions!

**EDIT**
You guys have an IRC channel ?

1) could be because you did change this url after your sitemaps was generated, and in such case, clearing the cache as you suggest in point 2) should solve it.

You sitemaps should auto regenerate every 24hours by default, but you can lower this to 12 hours, or even 6 to get fresher results, and even deactivate caching until you get over few hundreds url to list per sitemaps.

3) It must be the last time google cached page in your site, since it does not like to see url redirected from sitemaps (which is the case with this example), it could explain that it did not cached more urls and did not re-cache this one yet. Fix your sitemap and re submit it, should help him to go faster.

4) the zero dupe is the most important, since it performs the required redirecting, the no dupe is a good thing too, since it prevent your forum from displaying post url, which would later be redirected by the zero dupe (if properly set up).

5) look in the .xsl template, the gym_rss.xsl one, these link are pretty much hard coded in html, so they are easy to remove. Requires a cached update to see the result once edited.

About your edit, it's pretty new, but yes : #phpBB-SEO @ irc.aplacetochat.com
