Google sitemap displaying -fxx despite URL rewriting

Postby easyexpat » Wed Mar 17, 2010 12:24 pm

Hi,

When I check the sitemap generated by GYM, in http://www.easyexpat.com/forums/sitemapindex.xml
I still see the URL of the forums being:
forums/myforum-fxx.html

However using the Mod rewrite advanced i have currently everything with Forum ID Removing: forums/myforum.html in the forum names.

What is the problem? What is the configuration so my google sitemap is similar to the url displayed on the forums?

Thanks in advance for your help.

if I'm not mistaken you might try to run
/phpbb_seo/sync_url.php
And delete the cache after that.

Ah ok, it says
You must activate SQL Rewriting to use this script !

which I did not do.

So I activated the SQL Rewriting (I did not know exactly what was the big advantage but apparently it is necessary for Gym to rewrite properly for site maps and also it says it speeds up the rewriting, so why not...).

I cleared Gym cache
Purged main cache...

But still the same in Googlesitemap with forums/myforum-fxx.html

Sorry now I really checked your sitemap, but I don't see any problem with it!
First I checked the sitemapindex.xml, there are quite a few forum sitemaps it is linking to, like:

forums/forum-sitemap.xml
forums/greece-f172.xml
forums/china-f138.xml
forums/united-arab-emirates-f288.xml
forums/immigration-uk-f50.xml
... etc

Perhaps you are referring to the -fxxx.xml at the end of the sitemap url?
Keep that in mind that these are sitemaps and not your actual pages, so there is no sense to cut the fxxx from the ending, as only robots will check it anyway! You wrote, that there are links like "forums/myforum-fxx.html". This is not true. The sitemapindex.xml only links to sitemaps not actual pages.

If I click on a sitemap of yours (forums/greece-f172.xml for example) I can see that the url of the forum is rewritten correctly (forums/greece.html), so the problem you written about is not present. If you check forums/forum-sitemap.xml, you can see that all of the forum url-s are rewritten correctly.

I think you confused the xml-s with the actual pages. :)

Ah ok... now I understand. So it does not matter that the sitemap does not show the rewritten url as it links properly. Thanks again for the explanation and the check... I will submit the sitemap as it is then :-)

Was it important to activate the SQL rewriting? What was the impact?

No the SQL rewriting was nothing related, if you don't know what it is, you can just disable it of course. I just thought you had some problems with the cached urls being old, but that was nothing related.

Well actually it shows the rewritten url-s properly too, but something like that, yes. The sitemaps do not need to be renamed the same way as the forums.

Well it says that it speeds up URL rewriting so I better keep it then? Or does it over-load the SQL server?

UPDATE: Actually I turned it off as otherwise it offers the possibility to rewrite each topic url and I really don't nee that...
