http://www.dogs4sale.net has been running phpbb-seo for probably over 2 years now (I'm guessing).
It's been a success for me. Increased my site traffic by probably ~300% with all the SEO, RSS and Sitemap scripts.
Recently I also increased my Sitemap pages from 5k to 35k and the result has been a suprise. - 473k pages on the Google Index.

So it was indeed worth it to beat the record
Could you tell us how much more URL where indexed with the upper url limit ?
It'd just be to have a rough idea of the newly indexed pages vs new visitors ratio.

When I bumped up the sitemap limit from 5000 to 35000, I went from about 80,000 pages indexed in Google to about 500,000 pages.
6 months later google has slowly reduced that from 500,000 pages to about 280,000. I think this is because the pages are older and not changing so they are falling out of the index.

This is probably the reason. How many url does google sees in your sitemap (in the webmaster's account) ?

It stayed around 250,000 pages for about 6 months but today were back down to 9000 pages in the Index. 
Oh, to answer your question here is the info in google webmaster tools:
Total URLs in Sitemap: 741112
Indexed URLs in Sitemap: 226165
And each of my sitemaps have a warning which says:

I don't think that this would be related, but you can still fix this with phpBB2 : sitemaps - warnings (google webmaster tools)
