search engines do not see signatures

Postby Markas » Tue Jan 01, 2008 12:39 pm

Code: Select all
<!-- IF S_USER_LOGGED_IN --><!-- IF postrow.SIGNATURE --><div id="sig{postrow.POST_ID}" class="signature">{postrow.SIGNATURE}</div><!-- ENDIF --><!-- ENDIF -->

I already have such line which means that guests do not see signatures, how to make signatures not visible for search engines too? :roll: because when I click on results "Cached", I can see that search engines find those signatures.

Thanks for the help and I hope you understand :wink:

It's because bots are logged in users.

Use :
Code: Select all
<!-- IF S_REGISTERED_USER -->...<!-- ENDIF -->

If you want both bots and guest not to see something and :

Code: Select all
<!-- IF not S_IS_BOT -->...<!-- ENDIF -->

if you only want to hide something to bots, but be careful, this is going close to cloaking where the first solution is not.

So that means

so that means If their are certain forums which i don't want google to see In fact I dont want any one but my registered member to see, It will be counted as cloaking by google and other search engine?

Well not exactly, the only matter could be if you allow bots to crawl private forums (eg non visible by guests), cause it would technically be cloaking.

About the signature, I was just mentioning that filtering content for bot is cloaking where filtering for guest is not.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Even matt cutts in his blog says :
- For some reason, I hate signature links. Hate them. Your odds of getting a comment approved are much slimmer if you drop a sig in the body of the comment.

Now here's a question. Would it be possible to hide signature links for all users except maybe those over a certain post threshold ( for example users over 100 posts) or moderators?

I'm thinking because I have lots of people show up, make like 10 bullshit posts and then add 5 links in their signature. I'd like to reward regular quality users with them being able to have links in their sigs, and not allow it for other users.

Possible?

You mean like on phpBB SEO ?
In viewtopic.php we use :
Code: Select all
      'SIGNATURE'         => ($user_cache[$poster_id]['posts'] > 99 && $row['enable_sig']) ? $user_cache[$poster_id]['sig'] : '',

;)

Right...... Well, I've never claimed to be a Developer. I'm an engineer who only plays a Dev. on T.V.

:)

I'll try to figure it out.

If you need any help, just ask, we are here for just that reason.

For the edit mentioned above to allow signatures after a user has made so many posts....
OPEN:
/viewtopic.php

FIND:
Code: Select all
'SIGNATURE'         => ($row['enable_sig']) ? $user_cache[$poster_id]['sig'] : '',

REPLACE WITH: (replace 99 with the desired number of posts they should have to be able to have a signature.)
Code: Select all
'SIGNATURE'         => ($user_cache[$poster_id]['posts'] > 99 && $row['enable_sig']) ? $user_cache[$poster_id]['sig'] : '',

Thnx Typo.

I used this a few months back but never actually said thank you. It sure helps cut down the SPAM signatures on a forum.
