Would it be possible to change the default URL behaviour? Presently, clicking a link opens it in the same window. Can we invoke a new window call ? I want to stay linked to the forum while I explore the links I find there....

I can recommend this MOD:

[RC1] Prime Links - Classify Locals & Target Externals

Very easy to install and only external links open in a new window per default. And there are a lot more possiblities with this MOD you will probably like (just take a look into prime_links.php).
