Not found - Google 404 Errors

Postby remoteinsider » Mon May 04, 2009 5:32 pm

Hey i am currently in Google Webmaster tools for my forum and it is telling me - Not found (67) - 404 (Not found) for some of my forum URL's, i know the reason because a few weeks back i moved my PHPBB files from the sub directory '/PHPBB' to the root folder of my webserver.

How can i get rid of these 404 errors now? These pages don't exisit any more as i have moved them!

Thanks for your help in advanced!

If the old directory is not in use any more, you'd better redirect the old urls rather than loose them. If so you could just add this in your .htaccess, after the phpBB3 rewriterules, or before if not enough :
Code: Select all
RewriteRule ^old_directory/(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [QSA,L,NC,R=301]

With of course the correct domain to use.

Thanks dcz so my old directory was 'phpBB3/' which i removed and moved all my forum files to my root directory. My domain URL is Affiliate Marketing so the code i created is this:

Code: Select all
RewriteRule ^phpBB3/(.*)$ http://www.remoteinsider.com/$1 [QSA,L,NC,R=301]

Is this correct and where will this redirect all my URL's to the homepage as i currently have 72 not found URL's? Here is the section for the rewrites within my htaaccess file and i have added the above line to the bottom of this is this ok:

Code: Select all

dcz also is the correct way for letting Google know that this pages do not exist any more? and it seems these not found have now gone down to 29 links only so it looks like Google is un-indexing them now!

What you did should work, but it doesn't :www.remoteinsider.com/phpBB3/ does not seems to be redirected yet. Is the code online ?

If the redirecting would work with an http 301 redirection, there would not be anything more to do, as google would itself be redirected and would not consider the 404 as 404 anymore.

I'm wondering what you meant about the 410 though, could you elaborate a bit ?

What i meant is with the line above added to my htaacces file will this be ok, will Google know its a redirect and to disregard the URL in the long run from its index?

BTW i have now updated my htaccess file and its redirecting as it should.

Yes, http 301 redirected urls will be dropped from google index in favour to the new location. Google will fully understand that it's basically the same page, but that it now needs to be accessed with the new url.

I would not bother about deleted posts this much, because they are no supposed to be this many, and phpBB provides with a clear message about it. It's not a problem if the old post url is redirected to the this post does not exist message SEO wise.

Cool thanks, it looks like most of the not found pages have now cleared up within my Google webmaster control panel. Now i have a few showing up within the directory within the '/map' directory such as the following URL http://www.remoteinsider.com/map.php?forum=11

Any ideas what to do with this?

Looks like you did not allow any forum to have a map, are you using the last version of GYM and SEO URL mod ?

If you do not have an includes/ dir in your phpbb_seo/ dir, it means that you did not update to ultimate seo url yet, and most likely for GYM too, since only the latest gym will work with the ultimate seo url mod.
A quicker test is if you did not update this week, since it's when we released these updates ;)

Hi just checked and i do not have a includes dir in my phpbb_seo folder on my server. Also i installed all the mods as standalone and haven't updated any of them the last 4 weeks or so from here. Please see this post Upgrading from phpbb 3.0.4 to 3.0.5 and assist me in what i need to do?
