Postby dawidek » Fri Oct 25, 2013 8:14 am

Hello!

is it possible in some (any) way to change EXACT topic title and meta tags for seo purposes?

If your forum members are posting poor subjects (e.g., "Hello", "I have a question", "Newbie here"), moderators should consider changing them to more search-friendly subject lines. I think the meta keywords are worthless; Google has confirmed in various blog posts that they don't use them for search results, though the meta description is used.

Or did you have something else in mind?

Thanks for your answer but still, is there any possibility to influence meta tags?

Sure, the premod includes "dynamic metatags" code that generates keywords from the post content. See http://downloads.phpbb-seo.com/phpbb2-s ... gs-26.html and phpbb_seo_meta.php for details. But again, keep in mind that it's a waste of time: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot. ... a-tag.html

A: It's possible that Google could use this information in the future, but it's unlikely. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently we see no need to change that policy.

For what it's worth, I use an abbreviated version of the first post as the meta description, though I'm sure Googlebot could figure that out too without my help.

You'd have to write your own mod for that.

I'm skeptical. Google dumped meta keywords for a reason -- for years, spammers packed them with so much cr*p, they're unreliable. It's not impossible that some crawlers don't ignore them, but I hope they aren't that stupid. Besides, it's not like figuring out important keywords from the actual content is difficult.

My goal was to inform you about the merits of SEO. Why bother writing code that serves no purpose? Just for the "fun" of it? Anyway, if you really really want dynamic tags, add a template variable in overall_header.html:

Code: Select all
<meta name="description" content="{MY_META_DESCRIPTION}" />
<meta name="keywords" content="{MY_META_KEYWORDS}">

Then define it as you please in index.php, viewtopic.php and viewforum.php near the bottom before the call to page_header. Something like this:

Code: Select all
      $template->assign_vars(array(
         'MY_META_DESCRIPTION' => "set description as you wish here...",
         'MY_META_KEYWORDS' => "set your keywords here"
      ));

I used to do that for meta keywords, but removed it since it provided no utility and cost performance. For the description, I excerpt part of the first post. Probably unnecessary, but eh, it may help bots find the first paragraph and it does show up in non-keyword searches. The MY_META_DESCRIPTION and MY_META_KEYWORDS could come from (new) columns in the TOPICS_TABLE, if you want to set them on a case-by-case basis. Again, I don't think it's worth the effort, but that's a general outline of how I'd do it if I were so inclined.

Thanks for your help, and by any means I didn't want to be rude or anything, just wanted to sever off topic :)
