Which mods?

Postby chez » Sun May 24, 2009 10:13 am

I want to make my forum search engine friendly.

Which of the phpBB SEO mods do i need to install? I'm a bit confused as to which are compatibl, which are needed etc.

I guess I need one of the URL rewrite mods, do I then need Zero Duplicate or No Duplicate? (and what's the difference), what about optimal titles? Are any of the functions of one of these included in another? What order should they be installed in?

Thanks in advance

The easiest (and best actually) way to better understand what mod is doing what is to set up a local install of our SEO premod.

Then you'll be able to decide which mod you need and want if you really want to go for standalone installs, or if you just want to go for the premod (since it's the handiest solution).

The minimal SEO set up would be SEO url + zero duplicate, then optimal titles, meta tags and no dupe (in this order of importance, but they are all useful).

GYM sitemap & rss is as well kind of a must have as soon as your forum gets a bit big. And of course, all of our mods are compatibles with each others, only the zero dupe and the no dupe requires one of the SEO url mod installed before you can actually use them.

thanks dcz.

I can't use the premod, as the forum has mods applied already and I don't want to lose these.

I have so far installed the mixed SEO url and am about to apply the zero dupe.

Could you tell me the difference between the zero dupe and no dupes?

Thanks

The zero duplicate will HTTP 301 redirect dupes, including post urls if you properly set the post redirection option, the no duplicate will transform the post url displayed on forum and topic pages into the corresponding topic url ;)

Thanks. I think i get it..

So with no dupes installed, user functionality is identical (being able to click/link to a specific post), but the url displayed is the topics url (meaning a search engine will only index each topic once)?

Well, yes, but the no dupe is not a guarantee, since you could have post url posted somewhere, only the zero dupe will reduce all the possible duplicate, even if you still display some within your forum posts.

You should set up a local SEO premod install to try these two a bit and better understand what they do, the premod is installed as easy as phpBB.
