404 Errors For Just About Everything

Postby NocturneEyes » Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:45 pm

Hello,
I just installed phpBB3 and phpBB3-SEO-Premod last night. I have SEO Premod running in "mixed mode". I created a test category and a corresponding test form and when I try to view either of them I get a 404 error. I get a 404 error when I click on just about anything, actually.

Here is a link to the forum:

Any help and suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

As you are using a customized style you need to apply the Prosilver / subsilver2 code changes
Also check your phpBB Server and Cookie settings
I install and configure phpBB-SEO (and other mods) for a fair price and very fast. If you are interested simply send me a private message.

Thank you for that. I changed my style back to Pro Silver and I double checked my server and cookie settings and they are set exactly as recommended in the article you suggested. I'm still getting 404 errors all over the place.

Any other ideas?

I can't check forum URLs, because:

This board has no forums.

So you did generate a .htaccess file in -> phpBB-SEO -> .htaccess after configuring your settings and put it in the right place (it tells you where)?
Cleared the board cache?

If you want to put the generated .htaccess file in the phpBB folder:

Administration Control Panel -> phpBB SEO -> .htaccess -> Scroll down -> More Options: Yes -> Submit -> Scroll down again -> .htaccess location:
Put the .htaccess in the phpBB folder ? -> Yes -> Submit. Now copy and paste the generated code in the .htaccess file in your phpBB folder and clear the board cache again.

You should be able to see them now. I changed some permissions around. It's not just the category and forum that produces 404 errors. If you click on "Administrators" and "Global Moderators" down in the Legend or on "View unanswered posts" or "View active topics" or on my name (Aedryan Methyus) under "Our newest member" you will get a 404 as well...

I don't get 404 errors, but all *.html get's 301 redirectd to *.php - like:

http://www.methyus.com/magicians_magic_ ... es-f6.html
Status: HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
http://www.methyus.com/magicians_magic_ ... les-f6.php

Edit: Ok, for the second URL I get:

Status: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found

Anything in one of your .htaccess files that causes the redirect? Like:

RedirectMatch 301 (.*)\.html$ http://www.example.com$1.php or
RewriteRule ^/(.*)\.html$ /$1.php

Okay... I just went through the process of reconfiguring phpBB's .htaccess and overwriting the existing .htaccess file in my phpBB install directory. I also cleared the cache again. Clicking on the category or forum still produces a 404, but clicking on newest member doesn't. I haven't tried the other things yet.

To answer your question, YES and I was wondering about that... I just recently converted my html site over to php and into WordPress, where I am using custom permalinks and all pages are now php. I have a 301 redirect setup in my primary .htacess file, which is:

Code: Select all
RewriteRule ^(.*).htm /$1.php [R=301,L]

Thanks so much for your help, brother! I hope I can still make phpBB work...

This is what causes the problem:

Code: Select all
RewriteRule ^(.*).htm /$1.php [R=301,L]

If you deactivate that rewrite rule just for a minute by changing it to the following phpBB-SEO should run normal:

Code: Select all
#RewriteRule ^(.*).htm /$1.php [R=301,L]

I'm not sure what the best solution is in your case though.
The guys at http://www.webmasterworld.com/apache/ know everything about rewrites, so they should be able to come up with a solution.

Aaargh... I was afraid of that. >8>( I would imagine i'm going to have to come up with some sort of special rewrite rules for my primary htaccess, which would allow .html extensions in phpBB. I'm not sure if that would be possible without listing every one of my individual .php pages (almost 500 of them) in my htaccess...

So, there isn't any way I could configure phpBB to use .php extensions instead of .html, eh?

You could try this:

Open the generated .htaccess file in your phpBB directory and replace html with php using the search / replace function of the editor.

So, search for: html - replace (all) with php

This might work in conjunction with the rewrite rule in your main .htaccess file:

Code: Select all
RewriteRule ^(.*).htm /$1.php [R=301,L]

I'm not sure though.

Nope... No such luck! It would have taken all of the fun out of it if it would have been that easy... lol I would imagine is probably a just a file or two in phpBB3-SEO-Premod I could hack, so that it would render .php instead of .html. I have no clue which files those would be, though.

Could anyone on the phpBB3-SEO-Premod team tell me how I would go about this or if it's possible?

Thanks again so much for all of your help, Stephen26! Very cool of you!
