Meta description duplicates on forum pagination

Postby forhair » Sat Apr 24, 2010 8:54 pm

Hi, i have meta tags correctly on all pages, but i noticed that when i go to a forum category and continue to page 1..2..3.. and so on they have the same meta description tags (all duplicated)
Is there anyway to fix that?
Thanks.

Thanks for bringing it up. I checked on my forums and it seems you are correct. "Page 2" gets appended to the <title> but nothing changes about the meta description.

Perhaps I'll look into this more and see if I can post a solution. What would you like the meta description to say? I mean since you don't want to duplicate it, what is your expectation of the meta desc? What do you want it to say on subsequent pages?

If you also have installed the Optimal title mod, and put the title code before the meta tag one in viewforum.php, you can use the $extra_title variable to add the page number in the meta description (there is not much more to do, but it's no big deal either since paginated forum pages will be very hard to pull up in SERP, a lot harder than getting unique meta tags), the full code should look like this :
Code: Select all
// www.phpBB-SEO.com SEO TOOLKIT BEGIN - TITLE
$extra_title = ($start > 0) ? ' - ' . $user->lang['Page'] . ( floor( $start / $config['topics_per_page'] ) + 1 ) : '';
// www.phpBB-SEO.com SEO TOOLKIT BEGIN - META
$seo_meta->collect('description', $forum_data['forum_name'] . ' : ' . (!empty($forum_data['forum_desc']) ? $forum_data['forum_desc'] : $seo_meta->meta_def['description']) . $extra_title );
$seo_meta->collect('keywords', $forum_data['forum_name'] . ' ' . $seo_meta->meta['description']);
// www.phpBB-SEO.com SEO TOOLKIT END - META

Note that you can use this code even without the Optimal title mod installed, if of course you add the $extra_title line in viewforum.php.

Thanks for your help. i agree that this pages don't have much value but if all titles are the same then it's going to hurt Google's SEO.
Of all, Google hated duplicate titles or description and take your site down on SERP for such things.

Hello,

I noticed the same meta description duplication issue in Forum category while working on my forums in development server. Hope to fix it before it goes live.

Is there a way where I can pick the first 3 or 5 topics on each category pages, club them (create a sentence and separate each title by ". ") and form the meta description? This will continue to page 1..2..3..to n for each forum category.

e.g. phpBB2 SEO MODS

meta desc for the above page can be:
<meta name="description" content="phpBB2 SEO MODS : Seo for weblog. Inactive users + SEO mod rewrite advanced. Optimal Title and description. [META] Not Working Correctly. Last post by gigist. Muliple wraps / tops after update to Ultimate SEO URL 0.6.4" />

Is it possible to achieve this change through any addition or change of code? Please advise.

Thanks.
