Forum Directory is Ignored

Postby Carl » Sun Apr 12, 2009 4:18 am

I've successfully installed the SEO mod (I think) but the problem I am running into is that my forum directory is being ignored, i.e., instead of the URLs being rewritten to -http://mydomain.com/forum/ they are being rewritten to -http://mydomain.com/ only. Of course, this isn't working (404 errors). In other words, instead of -http://mydomain.com/forum/ask-bob, I am getting -http://mydomain.com/ask-bob (forum directory is omitted).

Is this a problem with my .htaccess file? How do I get the SEO premod 3.0.4 to recognize the forum directory?

Update:

URLs are now properly rewriting to include forum directory, i.e., -http://mydomain.com/forum/ask-bob but the page is not found. I've read elsewhere that this is definitely an .htaccess file problem. I've tried every combination I can think of but to no avail.

Where do I go from here? I really need to get this to work.

Is there any mechanism in place to pay for support? I've spent several hours over the course of the past two days playing with this but with no luck--and I'm not totally unfamiliar with .htaccess files because I have a load of redirects in there already (which I removed for the sake of experimenting with this SEO premod). In my latest attempt, the URL simply returns a plain text html file with the name of the URL, e.g., /forum/ask-bob and that's it. It's not connecting to the appropriate category and topic within the forum.

I've sent up this forum to transfer two Q&A sections that are currently being provided by a WordPress blog but the forum is a better venue for them. The problem is I can't make the transfer until I have this SEO premod working properly. I could arrange payment via PayPal.

If someone is available for support, please send me a PM.

Final Update

After considerably more experimentation, finally got this to work.

I think a big part of the problem is that all the various switches are poorly documented or not even mentioned. After repetitive trial and error, finally got this to work by turning on every possible switch with the exception of "remove small words."

I respectfully suggest that the estimated time for the proper installation of SEO premod 3.0.4 be changed from 15 minutes to 15 hours. ;>)

I'm sorry it took you so long. You weren't lucky at all, the issue with wrong settings in the server config ( for script path which was your first issue) is pretty hard to debug if you did not noticed that these settings could be set wrong.

For the second issue related to using WP together with our mods, is another tricky one, but was raised many time already. It's no luck again that you had this extra difficulty, but that's mainly why our .htaccess generator is able to generate .htaccess meant to be used in a sub directory, when the root level is used for wp for example.

To conclude, I'm the first one to know that documentation is not where we are the best, but if you pay attention, the acp is still decently commented, with examples and hints in the descriptions options.
And beside, the real hard part are the questions raised by the options not the options themselves. But these are in the end not really dealing with code or mod implementation, but rather to SEO in general and the way you'll put together a consistent strategy to promote your site and the forum in it.

That's why we advise our user to take the time to first try our premod on a local server, to be able to quickly try the possibilities and start wondering a bit about the choices to make. It's of course a good way to lower to almost zero the chances to run into trouble when going online, and to increase the chances that your forum's content will have the best impact in search engine.
